Super User NorcalBassin Posted October 25, 2020 Super User Posted October 25, 2020 Wow, that is terrible and I'm truly sorry you didn't get a chance to make it back to be with him in time. You were an incredibly dedicated son and I'm sure he was very proud of you and everything you've done for them. Thoughts and prayers for you and your family. 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted October 26, 2020 Author Super User Posted October 26, 2020 What I say next I do not mean to be a political statement, but say it as a matter of fact on lack of procedures. After my father was diagnosed and subsequently died of COVID neither the county nor the state did any contact tracing, tested the home, nor ordered testing for my stepmother who resided with him. They did not even mandate a quarantine. My only option was to enter into a hot zone and take care of her and try to disinfect the house. I took her for testing (still waiting on results) and despite notifying the med center of what happened and her exposure they took no extended precautions other than having her wear a mask. Then we wonder why the virus keeps spreading. Now we wait for her results and I need to wait another day or two before my son and I need to get tested. Thanks to everyone for your kind words. It really does help. 5 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 26, 2020 Super User Posted October 26, 2020 I’m sorry you had to go through all that, without much support or guidance. It sounds like you are are doing your best. The situation must be infuriating, frustrating, and really, really sad. 1 1 Quote
Super User Koz Posted October 28, 2020 Author Super User Posted October 28, 2020 Good news - my stepmother does not have COVID. I still need to wait another day or two to be tested, but I have no symptoms at this time. I found out a few more things including that when he was brought home the paramedics dumped him in his recliner and left. They never said a word. The coroner also told me that he could not believe my father was sent home. However, due to COVID restrictions he was not allowed to perform an autopsy. I set up an appointment to talk with an attorney but my stepmother does not have the strength to go through a lawsuit and wants this all behind her so I am respecting her wishes. However, I did relay my concerns to the Department of Health and I believe they will look into this. 1 Quote
Super User J Francho Posted October 28, 2020 Super User Posted October 28, 2020 I don't want to get political here, and being part of one of the immune system compromised groups, I totally get the precautions. I think the "due to restrictions" line is being used as a cop out to avoid difficult situations, when human decency should prevail. I'm not talking about haircuts or getting to the gym. Your story is heartbreaking, and only becomes more so as more details come out. I think you did a good thing pushing at the DoH for answers. Your stepmother probably knows that some lawyers are often bottom feeders, and muddy the water when they get riled up, and I get her reluctance. I hope you get some accountability or at least a reasonable explanation, down the road. I'm very sorry for what you're going through. 1 2 Quote
Super User Koz Posted November 4, 2020 Author Super User Posted November 4, 2020 We received the death certificate this week. Interestingly, under cause of death neither Covid nor pneumonia were listed despite the hospital discharge report listing those as his primary ailments when he was released 12 hours before he passed. Under cause of death they just listed the ailments he was diagnosed with over the past few years. And again, because he had been diagnosed with Covid the county coroner did not perform an autopsy. I’m venting here but it helps a little bit. I also post this as a warning to be vigilant if one of your loved ones is diagnosed with Covid. I regret not being able to get to town in time to confront the doctor and hospital. I never thought he would pass so quick. 3 Quote
