Hi, for my senior project at school for the engineering pathway, I have to make a solution for a problem... and since I love fishing I thought it’d be a good idea to merge the two. After getting help brainstorming on Reddit, I came up with a solution that solves a minor problem but I would definitely still use it. For the project I need sources to validate the problem so if anyone seeing this thinks it is a viable solution or the problem is annoying please comment below so I can consider it an interview. My problem is that rods without hook keepers force people to either keep their hook in the line guide or the butt of their rods, both of which are bad for the rod’s condition. There are other attachment s to keep your hook, but they don’t address the second part of my problem. I’m not sure the extent of this part, besides those who I’ve talked to, but have you guys ever been annoyed when it’s either windy or your line is loose and it’s hard to hook up to the line guide? So, my solution, simplified, is a cork piece that can be attached and detached to the rod to allow for safe keeping of your hook without damaging your rod, and not risking it falling out and hooking something you don’t want it to. If you’ve made it this far thank you, if you don’t agree, please leave constructive criticism and not mean comments because reddit got too aggressive at me lol. If you do like the idea, or just want to help I would appreciate if you left a comment. Thank you!!

Fuji makes a hook holder that resolves your engineering project.

To keep line around the Rod just snug up the line with hook on the holder, pull the slght away from the Rod like a bow and spin the Rod a few turns wrapping the around the giudes and rid blank.

If it were placed ahead of the reel, the cork piece you suggest would need to be either placed just so or else very streamlined. Otherwise, the outgoing line on a cast would rub against it or catch on it, especially when it got older and more worn.

Personally, I see nothing wrong with a hook keeper on the butt. I also have no trouble with hooking up under windy conditions. However, other people might.

It'd be nice to see a drawing of your device.

Kudos also for using your imagination!      ?   jj

I can't stand a hook holder on rods! ?

I simply put a hook on the reel frame above the line guide & wrap the line around the guides.

Most are a PITA. It’s often easier (although I’m sure frowned upon) to simply use a leg on the first guide as a hook holder.

My problem is that a lot of rods have hook keepers that aren't open on one end. This means if I'm running something like a drop-shot rig, I have to hook the hook to the keeper and spin the weight around the rod a dozen times. I hate that.

Fuji hook keepers FTW!!! Every rod gets one.

I saw those, but I was thinking the cork material in mine would make it easy to just stick in there and reel it up until it’s tight. Does the Fuji give you any problems with that being hard to do or anything?

A pic or drawing would help me visualize your solution.

It gives me a limit on the file size so here’s a link.

This is just a crappy prototype with household materials, the real will likely be 3D modeled and also attachable and detachable. What separates this from other attachable hook holders is that no matter how loose the line is, you can easily stick it into the cork and reel tight. Also you can use multiple for a multiple hook rig.

No, I love them. They are cleverly engineered so that they can be used in 3 different positions each of which allow for different hooks.

What I could use is a way to keep track of what line I have on my rods without putting label tape on them or some bulbous contraption stuck on the butt to ruin the appearance and balance of that $500 rod.

The reason I like the fuji ones is because if ive got something Texas rigged I dont have to take the hook out of the plastic, I just lift the hook keeper up and close it down on the actual line so that the lure doesn't pull through.

First do your research to learn what is already available and don't limit the design to a specific material. There is a Cali Rod clip that snaps onto the Rod to hold both hooks and drop shot weights. B & P rod wraps makes a drop shot weight holder, both these products are detailed at TW and vedio's.

I think its a great idea for the live/dead bait chunker.  Might have a hard time convincing a bass fisherman to add an additional hook keeper to his rod. There are many many versions of what you are proposing out there as well. Either way....glad to see someone trying to improve upon something in the rod world.  Don't give up!
