Ohioguy25 Posted October 17, 2020 Posted October 17, 2020 Man that was bad, especially being such an otherwise perfect day. Sun was shining it felt great. I hit 2 different prime spots too and was using pretty big decent sized (2-4”) live shiners. Both deep holes after a current on this small river. Not even a nibble. It dropped down to 37 last night, could that have shocked the fish or caused them to stop feeding? I wanna go back out tomorrow but the low is 33 tonight so it’ll likely be even worse. Warms back up next week though, might have to wait for the overnight lows to get back up in the 50’s Wednesday, or do you think it’s worth trying again tomorrow? Gonna be in the low 60s, just cold tonight. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted October 17, 2020 Super User Posted October 17, 2020 We had an extremely light frost last night, and I only got to go out for about an hour this afternoon. I caught 3 dinks. Tried several lures, but the only one that worked was the Bomber 13a. No other crank, no spoon and no spinner. Any more, I've been throwing the kitchen sink to find out what works; it's been different each day. I make 3-5 casts with one lure, then change. Crazy. Absolutely crazy. No predictability. jj Quote
Super User Bird Posted October 17, 2020 Super User Posted October 17, 2020 These skunked threads are very telling and the fact that I respond is very telling. Ok I'm not saying. Lol It was a bite, not a snag ! 1 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted October 17, 2020 Global Moderator Posted October 17, 2020 It was a tough day here too. 18 bass and 1 catfish. Catfish was way bigger than any of the bass and probably only 5 pounds. Biggest bass was maybe 2.5lbs, most were under 1.5lbs. On the plus side I broke the 2,000 mark for the year plus a couple. 2 Quote

Ha tough day...only 18 bass. I feel real bad for you! I haven't caught 18 bass in my last 6 trips. 2 Quote

I would typically expect 30-40 with a few over 3, maybe a 5 pounder or 2 at the lake I was at. Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted October 17, 2020 Super User Posted October 17, 2020 Must be a good lake..don't have such a thing around me 1 1 Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted October 17, 2020 Super User Posted October 17, 2020 No skunk, but close. I was on the water before sunup. Had a bass hit my WP and missed it, stopped the retrieve and it hit it again. Missed that strike as well. Tried Ned rig, weightless TR, WR, crankbait... nothing. Moved to a new spot and tried the same. Nothing. Finally switched to a purple Zoom Mag 2 TR with a 1/4 oz bullet weight and had one strike. Not much, but better than a skunk! 2 Quote
Super User geo g Posted October 17, 2020 Super User Posted October 17, 2020 Skunked is the easy thing to do these days. Keeping your mind in the game, and sticking it out until you find something, is much harder. Look for current, and the eddies around that current, this has been my go to method during high water times. They are either way back in the thick stuff in the shade and often hard to get too, or positioned in attack mode in these eddies, around the mouth of creek channels, culvert pipes, or funnel points around grass islands with water flowing in between. Look for slack water close to the flow. It's not easy with record rains, but they are there, and often looking for an easy meal! Quote

It’s been dry as a bone out here, water is at it’s lowest. Quote

Yep..we've been in severe drought stage here for 4 or 5 months...this is the lowest I've seen the local river and ponds in....well I don't even know how long. It was windy and cold today but I managed 3 on a lip less...2 dinks and 1 close to 4lbs. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted October 18, 2020 Super User Posted October 18, 2020 I didnt even bother to go out with wind gust up to 40 mph . So yeah , I got skunked . I practiced skip casting instead and did not improve any . I guess I'm just too uncoordinated for it . Quote

I've tried to teach myself to skip off and on and I usually end up ticked off with a blown up reel. Then ill randomly try it one day when the situation arises and ill do it perfect. Maybe when I'm trying...I'm trying to hard or thinking about it to much. 1 Quote

Super User Teal Posted October 18, 2020 Super User Posted October 18, 2020 No skunk but my son and I were dang close yesterday afternoon. After driving 10 miles down the main lake to fish an area that has been good to me and several surranging areas we caught zero in 5 hours. We drove back toward around ramp and and started into Lee's creek, ( our ramp is in the back of it) and saw some shad flickering about 300 yards into it. We stopped to try it. The was emerging water willow grass rthat went right to a drop off. We caught 2 a piece on shallow cranks.. top water bite was dead. Storm arashi 2.5 all 4 caught in chartreuse and black back. We did this in less than 20 minutes. This reinvigorated us...we fished for 2 more hours with nothing. Came close but kept the monkey off our back. Didn't weight them but my guess is 2 fish at 2.5 lbs and 2 less than 12 inches. Quote
NoShoes Posted October 18, 2020 Posted October 18, 2020 2 fish, missed another before giving up with the wind. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted October 18, 2020 Super User Posted October 18, 2020 I went Saturday. About 8 AM the wind opened up with very strong gusts. The temps started going up from the high 40's in the morning to the low 70's by noon. Not a good combo around here. I ended up picking up 4 floaters that had blown into the shore, and got to check out the fall colors in the trees that were changing. Quote
Global Moderator TnRiver46 Posted October 20, 2020 Global Moderator Posted October 20, 2020 Got skunked again after work yesterday, winter can’t come fast enough Quote

MGF Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 This time of year is always a challenge for me. The weather is a big part of that. The weekend is only two days and blown out weekends takes away a big chunk of the season's fishing. This year has been extra tough because of the low water. I can't hardly navigate the closest river (even in the canoe). I spent last night driving around looking at ramps on a more distant river to see where I could get into the water. Of three ramps I found one where I might be able to launch without getting the truck stuck in the sand. LOL and winter is coming on fast. Quote
Sphynx Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 Got skunked yesterday, they just reopened a spot that had been closed for a year due to wind damage and I spent a couple hours exploring it, the wind has been brutal this week and the temps are plummeting so I wasn't exactly expecting a lot, but when you get an unexpected and unwelcome day off work you have to fill it with something, I think I am going to have to hit that part of the river with some waders, it's got a 6in shallow flat that goes for about 100 ft or so at current level, and I can't reliably cast a ned rig past that point with wind coming directly at me, I have a feeling the skunk and I are going to be spending a fair bit of time together as these temperatures continue to swing, there are reports that up top of the valley we are due our first snows by this weekend, no fun. Quote
TriStateBassin106 Posted October 21, 2020 Posted October 21, 2020 Currently on a 2 day skunk streak. This nasty algae bloom has taken over my pond and the water temps are 65. They won't hit anything. This sucks lol Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted October 22, 2020 Super User Posted October 22, 2020 I didn't bass fish today but I hit a small local river...for sheer fun and numbers of fish it was awesome. Throwing soft plastics I caught carp, buffalo, red horse suckers , catfish, small mouth, sauger and walleye. Quote
Super User Log Catcher Posted October 22, 2020 Super User Posted October 22, 2020 I am on the longest skunk streak I have ever been on. Went again today with no luck but it did improve. I did get a few bites. Fairly clear skies with some wind and water temps in the low to mid 60s. I do not understand why these fish are not biting. Could not catch one on a finesse worm on spinning rod. Today was my fourth time on this particular lake and I have not caught anything out of it yet. Quote
