And the idiots are out on Minnetonka already - just 2 weeks ago we had open water and it really hasn't been all that cold. I just hope this guy makes it back to shore before he falls through.

Taken this morning.

We’ve had ice on our lake for over two weeks now. I took a step off our dock with one foot and it started cracking! I’ll go on it when there’s 5”. I’m not a big fan of ice let alone ice fishing. I remember one time I was ice fishing when I was about 6poundbass’s age at about 10pm and the ice shifted and shot water up the hole about 6” and that scared the ? out of me!

The one time I went ice-fishing was on Lake Bemidji in northern MN. Mississippi comes in the south end of the lake, exits the east side. The river in the channel between Bemidji and Irving was still open...as well as 60'-70' into Bemidji. Ice was thick enough that I could cast and retrieve into that open water with no issues.

When I was taking my Limnology class in college - we actually measured the ice near that opening...12" of ice less than 10' from open water.

(Mississippi flows north from Itasca to Bemidji, east from Bemidji to Winnibigoshish, then starts going south)

Winter starts here in 1hr 36 minutes. The cold front is moving through Arkansas now

and will cross the Mississippi River shortly.  The temperature is 60* currently, but will

drop into the 20's tonight and stay bitter cold tomorrow.

FIFY

Astronomical winter started Nov 1 - this is 'mid-winter' by the stars/sun position.

After a couple of days in the teens and 20's we'll get back above 40. Certainly more than enough cold for freeze up on small waters I fish. Long range forecast keeps us slightly above normal so I should be back at it soon. Just wish business wasn't so good. Got lots of painting to do.

We are expecting temps near 50 degrees and over 2” of rain in the next 24 hour period. That combined with the 32” of snow we got last week, which is still mostly here, is going to cause some flooding for sure.

Then the deep freeze comes Christmas night.

Got about 7 inches of snow here just west of Minneapolis. Then the gale force winds came, blowing it all around. Now it’s bitter cold. The high today is 6 degrees.

Ya, I measured 7.5" in my backyard this morning. It's very cold, and even just going out to the mailbox with that wind blowing was NOT fun.

Under the Imperial Russian penal system,  forced exile to Siberia had been in use since

the seventeenth century for a wide range of offenses and was a common punishment

for political dissidents and revolutionaries. So, what did you guys do to get exiled to MN?

Dad was born and raised here. Though I was born and raised in MA, at 14, dad got a transfer...to MN. When I got out of the Air Force, moved to the Minneapolis area and have been here since. It might be cold, but we got lots of culture, wild and open area a short drive from the city, and (overall) the most accepting population in the country - and that last is from experience in moving around/visiting other states.

I might complain about the weather, but it's the people that keep me here (for the most part).

My favorite aunt & uncle have lived in Minnetonka for more than fifty years.

At one rime my aunt was "Betty Crocker". They have always loved it up there.
"Kids" and grandkids like it, too!

Hope you are correct. Sometimes northerners don’t realize that our roads curve and go up and down mountains. Even the best drivers from up north can’t drive down ice. My fishing buddy from Michigan won’t drive down here in snow. I asked why and he said “roads are straight and flat in Michigan”
