People in Ely - northern MN near the Canadian border - are already doing some bang-up ice fishing.

The first widespread snow of this late-starting winter season remains on track to arrive late tonight through Saturday evening. Gusty northeast winds are also expected to result in areas of blowing snow with the potential for isolated power outages, especially in A-Jay's home.

...and it was supposed to be 50 this weekend as of yesterday but unfortunately it's been downgraded to 42

That'll be fun to deal with on the kayak this weekend...

I'll have to check if the wind is still supposed to be crazy....

We’re right close to the line as usual. It’ll either be 2” of rain or 4-8” of snow. My guess is a mixture of both leaning towards extremely heavy wet snow.

I know it’s passed due but I’m not looking forward to it.

Yeah, that same system is heading straight towards us as well, guess it’ll be a couple hours after it hits you guys. We still have a little bit of old, crusty snow in the bush but it’s been pretty dry otherwise. Sounds like it’s gonna start to look a bit more “seasonal” around here now.

Speak for yourself - still no sign of snow in the forecast here...we're looking at a good possibility of a 'brown' Yule.

Nothing but rain here and a ton of it!

Ice is out on the lake as well. I guess I was 3 months off with my prediction. ?

Lots of rain here down state as well.  My mom sent me pics of her home in West Branch a bit ago, she is getting tons of snow right now.  My brother put the plow on his truck and is going to head out later on and dig friends out.

We ended up with around 3 inches of the white stuff. The lake is starting to freeze over again.

We had my favorite weather today but I didn’t get to fish. Dreary gray skies all day, spitting light rain here and there and about 40-45 degrees . Perfect!!! I bet the smallmouth were stuffing themselves to the gills on shad

A big Nor'easter recently occured in several sates. It is nice to see snow in pictures and but I would prefer not dealing with it very single year. Ice fishing does look fun but I prefer fishing in water I can fish with topwaters.

Folks up this way sort of need the snow; myself included.

The 12 feet or so average contributes to the economy, insulates everything for the super cold that's coming and just looks a whole lot better.

Works out to about an inch a day from Nov thru March;

but often starts much earlier and lasts far longer.

It's like living in a snow globe for half the year.

How that load is distributed each winter determines if or how many times I end up shoveling the roof.  Easily the single most physically demanding (and least fun) thing I do.

At least you have a roof with a walkable pitch! There’s a lot of super steep ones around here that I imagine people have to hire everything done (including squirrel trapping and bat exclusion by yours truly)

Mine's a walkable pitch - but I've got a roof-rake. Wife won't let me on the roof anymore.

I wear heavy duty boot spikes.

Still a little sketchy.

Metal roofs are the way to go here and many folks go that way.

Snow slides right off all by itself.

Just can't park your truck under it.

I tried the roof rakes - broke like 3.

Also I needed 'multiple extensions' to reach the peak and had to dig out a trench around the house to work out of before I even started on the roof !

Either way, still hard work.

Makes me feel like I earn Every Fat smallmouth I catch.
