Tank1018 Posted October 15, 2020 Posted October 15, 2020 So I particularly fish shallow a lot, mainly pitchin light jigs and Texas rigged soft plastics around cover. The rivers and bayous I fish mainly are narrow and have a lot of over hanging cover and the 7’6 Flippin stick I have is not cuttin it. Looking to buy a shorter rod with decent backbone to get the job done. What do you guys use/or have in mind? Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted October 15, 2020 Super User Posted October 15, 2020 Shimano Expride 7'2 H or Expride 7'3 XH depending on the cover. Quote

Also, any recommendations on a reel for pitchin light baits, have heard the Shimano Curado 70 is good for this but haven’t had a chance to use one. 2 minutes ago, jbsoonerfan said: Shimano Expride 7'2 H or Expride 7'3 XH depending on the cover. Thanks. This will mainly be a setup for pitchin to lay downs and light cover. Quote

I have a 70 Curado and a 70 Scorpion, both would work well for that technique. I prefer the looks of the Scorpion though. 2 minutes ago, Tank1018 said: Thanks. Not looking to spend more than $175 on the rod, being that I’m gonna end up getting a reel for this setup as well. And I typically don’t throw anything over a 1/2 oz since it’s usually pretty shallow where I’m fishing. 8ft or less Quote

Super User Columbia Craw Posted October 15, 2020 Super User Posted October 15, 2020 Dobyns Sierra 735C. However, if you are in no hurry, wait until the Kaden series becomes available. They will have full cork rear handles. I have the 744C and it's a wonderful rod. The 745C should be spot on for your needs and budget. 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted October 15, 2020 Super User Posted October 15, 2020 I had a Daiwa Tatula 7'1' H/F "Jig" rod that I imagine would do the trick nicely. I leant it to my son and he lost it as it fell off his kayak into the pond, but will likely buy a new one this winter. 2 Quote

I know in the expert line there is a 6’11 heavy fast action that I believe is a listed as a frog rod but a lot of folks use it for pitching jigs. It’d likely be a better option. I love my Experts. I paid around $175-$180 for all of mine Dobyns Champion also has a 6’10 4 power that would be perfect. If you check out their website you can find refurbished rods in your price range. 1 Quote

Also on Black Friday Tackle Warehouse or American Legacy will have it under $200 Yeah I wish they had that rod in the low rider series, that rod sounds a lot like what I’m lookin for. 6’10 to 7’2 I think would be ideal. Just can’t stand pitchin my jig and hittin tree limbs overhead or having my line get tangled in them lol Quote
Super User Fishes in trees Posted October 16, 2020 Super User Posted October 16, 2020 I've looked at that Falcon Head Turner Rod. Every time I go to the tackle shop I look at it I think about buying it. I'd get that one. Don't care what the action allegedly is - I've handled it and it seems pretty sweet to me. 1 Quote

Super User FryDog62 Posted October 16, 2020 Super User Posted October 16, 2020 I use the Tatula 7’1” Heavy Fast for jigs 3/8-1/2 jigs works very well and priced even better. On par with a lot of $200 rods IMO. 1 Quote

Buy one and youll regret it. You’ll end up with multiple head turners like the rest of us victims Ive never handled the Low Rider HT but the Expert HT has a faster action than the Cara. I would expect the LR to mimic the Expert. Personally I prefer the action of the Expert over the Cara but will be very interested to see what the new Cara is like this winter. 1 Quote

I’ve had a couple Falcon Bucoo rods, actually broke one in two pieces so I kinda started to shy away from Falcon altogether. I’ve never used the LowRider, Expert, or Cara series unfortunately but I’ve heard nothing but good things about them. I’ve pretty much narrowed it down to 3 brands so far Falcon, Dobyns, and Castaway. Just wanna put a few in my hand before I pull the trigger. Thank you all for sharing your thoughts Quote
