My Buddy and I were out fishing and not doing particularly well.  During the really slow period we started talking about different fishing techniques when he asked if I had ever caught a fish on an A-Rig.  I told him I had an A-Rig (I bet all of us do), but never even fished it (like I assume a lot of us haven’t).  He then said, “Well, if you have it, I challenge you to catch a fish on one today.”  I figured, what did I have to lose as we weren’t really doing great on anything else, so Challenge Accepted.

I untangled the wires from the hooks of other lures and threw on whatever paddle tails I had.  Then I chucked that hunk of bent wire and flailing rubber out into the vast expanse.

Well, it didn’t take long as this fish absolutely crushed that A-Rig on my second cast.  She had a belly that was so abnormally fat, it looked like it is trying to bulge out of the picture.

She went 6lb 6oz., which is a fish that will turn around any slow day.  After I released the fish, I turned to my Buddy and said, “Challenge Complete.”

Nice day, and nice fish

Nope - MN laws restrict their usage to only 2 hooks or lures for the entire rig - and those have to be within 9" of each other as measured up one arm to the junction and down the other arm. So pretty much useless for it's intended purpose, though the other arms can have hookless baits/lures. But with only a 40% chance of the fish attacking a hook on a 5-arm A-Rig...well...

Only 2 hooks allowed in Kansas too but I'll toss one with 2 hooks and 3 dummies and it's surprisingly effective. I don't know of a bait that fish seem to hit harder than an A-rig.

I never looked into it that much. Really don’t fish that heavy either. But would be interested in a lighter/smaller version.

great fish!

I dont have one either . How heavy are they ? Seven foot mh rod is thee biggest rod I carry .

With a MH you’re best throwing a Flash Mob or similar... Traditional A-Rigs can be quite heavy..

Never had any interest in an A-Rig.  Just seems cumbersome and a PITA to me.  *shrugs*

I too have yet to throw an A-rig but it's quite obvious that they can be productive.

Really nice Smallmouth for sure.

You would be correct. They work well for people but it’s not very fun for me to throw that mess

I would love to try one but the amount of "Hulk smash" that would happen when I snag and break off a $30 rig holding $25 in paddle tail baits would be epically bad.

Whoa! ?  Thats all I needed. I’m bringing my never been used 4 year old  A-rigs with me this Sunday and I even got someone to blame when I skunk. ?

Congrats on that beast of a specimen!!

Very nice!  A 6lb 6oz bass is impressive, but a 6lb 6oz smallmouth is LEGENDARY

Dang...
