OnthePotomac Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 Anyone know the difference between a Scorpion 17 and a Scorpion 19 reel? Quote
LCG Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 They have the 17 in DC and BFS. I believe the 19 is their version of the curado k but with an MGL spool. I would love to hear from anyone that has experience with the scorpion mgl. Looks like a great reel and can be had for much cheaper than the new curado mgl, here in Canada anyways. Quote
OnthePotomac Posted October 12, 2020 Author Posted October 12, 2020 You may have something. The 19 MGL is a 150 size I know. Tackle Tour has a great write up on the Scorpion 19 by Cal. Quote
Super User jbsoonerfan Posted October 13, 2020 Super User Posted October 13, 2020 I have the Scorpion 70 and the Scorpion MGL (150). The MGL is a fabulous reel and I love mine. I use the 70 for pitching jigs and soft plastics, and it is a great reel for that. Quote

Looking for pitching with a 1/8oz weight and trick worms, creatures, etc., the K will do it, but curious if the Scorpion MGL can do it better. Quote

DomQ Posted October 13, 2020 Posted October 13, 2020 I've got 2, sold my 2 curado k reels for them. I haven't looked back! The reel casts so flawlessly and the retrieval is very smooth. The mgl spool really helps with the casting performance, you can even swap the spool with the curado k if you'd like. Quote

I have several (5) of the 19 Scorpion MGL's. I love them! Super smooth, cast like a dream and when or if you get one. Take into consideration this bit of advice. Engage all four brakes on the spool. It does cast much better like that. My first couple I had just engaged two of the brake tabs and it made the reel very easy to birds nest. Fishingmickey Quote

Fishingmickey Out of curiosity, do you have any suggestions or input on the handle lengths 84mm vs 90mm for the xg model? And can they cast the lighter range of 1/4oz? Quote

Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. I have not tried it down to that low, but I am guessing it would handle it well. I have used it for 3/16 and it did just fine. 1 Quote

I'm using a 1/8 oz. ball jig head with a 5" finesse worm (probably close to or over a 1/4 oz.). 1 Quote
OnthePotomac Posted October 15, 2020 Author Posted October 15, 2020 Two more comments from Scorpion owners: “15 and 17 Scorpions are based on the "i" series reels by Shimano. The 15 being the regular braking system, and the 17 being the DC (Digital Control) braking system. The 19 (MGL)is based on the "k" series reels, which is what is currently being produced.” “You are gonna hold more line on the Scorpion than you are the Curado (MGL)If you are using thin lines, and light baits...Curado. Otherwise, go for the Scorpion.” Quote

There is also a Scorpion 70 based on the Curado i70 but with a BFS spool and braking system from a 16 Aldebaran BFS. There is also the Engetsu based on the Scorpion 70 with micro mod gears, aluminum side plate and shallow spool. . Know anything about Shimano reels? Quote
OnthePotomac Posted October 15, 2020 Author Posted October 15, 2020 I gave in and a Scorpion 19 MGL is on the way. Quote

I wish I could be so decisive. Keep going back and forth between MGL reels from slx 70 MGL, curado 70 MGL, scorpion 150 mgl, chronarch MGL, to bantam mgl. I am all over the place Quote
