First time trying Drop-Shot...third cast..POW!

Fished local lake today...500+ acres, lots of standing timber, rip-rap, lilly-pads. I feel pretty confident in shallow water. Deep water is a challenge. Today the bite was tough...only managed one small bass and a 13" crappie.  

 

This lake has trees in 8-10 feet of water, next to creek channel that drops to 13-20 feet. Talked to an old fishing buddy today while I was on the water...great to hear from him! We talked for over an hour -- family, life, jobs, and of course fishing. I was complaining about troubles fishing deep water...he suggested drop-shotting. I read up on it, but never tried until today. 

 

Full disclosure, I had to pull a youtube video and learn how to tie the knot.  

 

Rigged it up on my light spinning rod with 6lb Trilene XL. Threw on an old FLW french-fry. Was not expecting much...first two casts...nothing.

 

It was a bit windy, so I positioned myself in the creek channel, facing in to the wind. Cast the drop-shot in to 9 feet of water near some trees...shook the rod tip on cast #3 and I felt something on the line. Have to admit, that's a whole new strike sensation.  Set the hook and this nice bass was on the other end. 

 

17", 3 pounds, 9 ounces.  

 

Immediately sent my buddy the picture...he was stoked!

 

This 53 year old dog learned a new trick : )

Nice bass. I haven’t connected on a drop shot yet, but the water is no deeper than 7’. Not sure if that’s a factor but I’m guessing it is. Reading this makes me want to try it again though!

Congrats!  I remember my first drop-shot fish and, yes, it is a different/new feel of a bite.  In fact, I still get giddy when I get a drop-shot fish because it's a technique I had wanted to learn so bad and I still get amazed that it works so well under certain conditions when other ones don't.

 

The drop shot has saved many-a-day for me.

Couple months ago the night before a tournament a friend tells me if I want to catch fish on that lake I needed to use dropshot. So on to YouTube I went. I didn’t have any of the right stuff but I did find a couple old bell sinkers with the swivel and some smaller hook to try. 1st cast of the morning with my drop shot setup and it’s hung up with weeds. Reel it up and no weeds. 14” bass hanging on to that worm. I didn’t catch another fish on drop shot the rest of the day but it did peek my interest. I’ve caught a few fish now on it and I still don’t have the right terminal tackle. Hits are a totally different feel just like my main technique of dipping weeds with jigs has a unique feel.

Love the drop shot and always amazed that the tiny little hook is always perfectly located in top off mouth.

 

Casting accuracy suffers some with the hanging pendulum. Lol

All I use is a #1 hook and a bullet sinker. Tie the hook on via Palomar knot and leave a long tag end. Tie the bullet weight onto the tag end and viola, drop shot. Never understood using “special sinker” for it when I already have a boat load of sinkers that sink just fine

Oh yeah, sometimes if I don't catch any bass and I feel I want to have some, ill use drop shot and wacky worm or weightless Texas, dpi can never go wrong with them, specially the drop shot which to my surprise ive seen most of the fisherman's including myself catch the PB on drop shot. you know what? I am going to make post to ask others and lets see what Weill be the result.

I used to be a dropshot freak and never left home without one tied up.  Deadly presentation in a lot of different conditions.  I will have to admit that I share what used to be strictly dropshot time with a Ned rig now.

There are few things more rewarding in this sport as putting another arrow in your quiver of knowledge.  My best tip for drop shotting is to fish it fast!  I get many more strikes on the drop than soaking it.  Good job today man!

Drop shot is my kryptonite, I can't catch a fish on one except little bluegills pecking at it, one of my 2021 goals is to finally catch one on a drop shot. The Ned rig on the other hand is my baby and I love her ❤❤

All I catch with a "poop jig" is yellow perch and rockies.  A drop shot on the other hand is responsible for my PB smallmouth and few checks.

Yeah the bubba rig is more up my alley.

You bubba shot guys: do what @TnRiver46 does, and use a bullet weight. Rig it point down, and it’ll punch through the weeds. I tie it up with a tiny split ring  at the end, and point down. You can also peg it and skip the knot, if you’re feeling wealthy. Some like it that way since you lose it on the hook set, and there’s no weight pulling on the hook to unbutton the fish. I’m only 10% made of money, it’s not for me.

This has happened to me....Now when I throw it its with a 1/2 ounce weight and 3/0 light wire hook, not in the junk....cylinder weights dont pull as had against hooks like a bell or ball
