Manly Studson Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 I’m looking for a spinning rod that is short and has good casting distance. I fish creeks in tight areas (overhanging trees and steep banks). I throw lures in the 1/8 to 1/4 ounce range. I use a 6’ Fenwick HMG medium light/fast rod and would like a little more distance. I tried the 6’9” version of the same rod and the casting distance wasn’t much further. Any suggestions you have are appreciated. Thank you. Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted October 10, 2020 Super User Posted October 10, 2020 Four years ago, I tried exactly the same thing with exactly the same rod. When the results didn't turn out the way I expected, I tried another 6' rod, a Shimano Compre. I had braid on both of them. I finally had to admit to myself that you can't cheat the laws of physics. Have fun fishing! ? JJ Quote

greentrout Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 When creek and pond fishing I use one of my favorites BPS 5'10 MH spinning rod ... rated 1/4 - 5/8 oz.... 6-17 lbs. Tourney Special ... BPS also sells a 5'8" Medium version 4-12 lbs ... 1/8 - 1/2 oz. ... very happy with the one I own and would recommend ... good fishing ... 1 1 Quote
waymont Posted October 10, 2020 Posted October 10, 2020 G Loomis IMX-pro 721 SJR. Fantastic creek rod. You can also look for a used IMX version. 1 1 Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted October 10, 2020 Super User Posted October 10, 2020 I have been hiking to a spot on my local stretch of the river that is overgrown. Only a few tight spots are available for me to fish. To fish these areas I purchased a 6’ Medium Light action Lew’s Laser HS from Walmart. It has been the first rod I own that is the happy medium of small size and great casting distance. I was surprised at how far I could toss a split shot rig with the rod paired with a size 100 or 200 reel. The rod cost $29.99 1 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted October 10, 2020 Super User Posted October 10, 2020 St. Croix 6' ML Fast. I have used this rod for just about 12 years and it has stood the test of time. I use it for inline spinner baits and 4in senkos. As small and light as it is, it has brought in some big fish for me, including my PB (10lb 2oz). 1 1 Quote

That’s exactly what I thought when I saw it. I liked the IM6 blank so much I picked up the medium spinning and the medium casting rods the next day. Quote
LCG Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 I am a big fan of the BPS Carbonlite 2.0 6'8" M-Xf spinning rod. The action and power are just perfect for my style of fishing. Also had the Fenwick hmg 6'9" ML-F and St croix Mojo 6'8 M-XF. The Carbonlite is the perfect middle ground of the two rods. Use it for Ned rigs, weightless trick worms and wacky rigged senkos mostly. Lure rating is accurate, rated 1/8-1/2oz. 1 Quote

zell_pop1 Posted October 11, 2020 Posted October 11, 2020 What reel and line are you using? There is more to distance casting than just the rod. Quote

I have a casting rod in this series, and it is great. I’m not sure about the first microwave guide on spinning rods—how it affects the cast. There is a 6’6” ML/F at my local bait shop. Quote
Tim Kelly Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 If you can't use a longer rod for practical reasons the other way to increase casting distance is heavier or more aerodynamic baits and or using finer line. A PE 0.6 or 0.8 mainline might make a significant difference for you, especially if you're using some of the thicker "6lb" monos. 1 Quote

Along with making sure it’s spooled correctly, no twists and just shy of the bevel on the spool lip. 1 Quote
zell_pop1 Posted October 12, 2020 Posted October 12, 2020 I am going to 2nd the thinner line. I have 2 6lb lines at home-Pline Cx which is .0084 " and Trilene XT which .0100", the CX cast will cast further. 1 Quote

I don’t own the TP 1 Black spinning rod, like you I just have the casting version. I do however own a few Lew’s spinning rods with the microwave guides. My Mach 2, Mach Crush and TP 1 White all have the microwave first guide. The guide has very little to no effect on my casts with spinning gear. Maybe slightly more accuracy. I noticed it while casting in line spinners. I was able to get in tight spots without getting hung up.It could be my imagination. 3 hours ago, Tim Kelly said: If you can't use a longer rod for practical reasons the other way to increase casting distance is heavier or more aerodynamic baits and or using finer line. It’s 6lb line diameter is the same as most brands 4lb 1 Quote
