Catching big bass

I grew up in South Florida.  I started fishing when I was 12 years old.  As a teenager, I read everything I could find about bass fishing. I was totally obsessed with catching a big bass.  Try as I might, I could not catch a bass over 6 pounds.  It seemed everyone around me caught big fish, but me.  One day I decided the best way to catch a big bass was to use bigger bait.  I started with 9" flip tail worms and progressed to 14" JW Hawg Hunter Worms which were like a rope cut out of a tire.  I started fishing deeper, thinking more big bass are on the bottom.  I eventually caught an eight pounder on a black Hawg Hunter.  It seemed like once I crossed that line, I began catching bigger fish.

My fishing sessions always start with a prayer. I thank God for all my blessings including having another day to fish. 
 

Fishing to me has always been being in the right place at the right time throwing the right bait while being lucky and blessed.

Like WRB said, you gotta fish where the big ones exist.......that's going to be my excuse as to why I've only caught 1 DD bass in 50 years of bass fishing. 

 

It's something you never forget but after many years, 5lbs is a mammoth fish anymore. 

 

My 10.2 bass came on Aug 12th 1983 on a brown/black culprit worm, nothing over 8lbs since. 

 

Still love hearing and watching video of giant bass being caught and released.

Grats! Anything that big in the north is a dream come true! 
 

I have been fortunate and dare I say skillful, lucky and blessed enough to catch some of the biggest fish the River stretch I fish has to offer. 
 

Bigger waters like Lake George and Champlain In my area require water craft bigger than my kayak to search out the big girls.

Yep, I’ve switched over to big swimbaits a few years ago, the numbers of big bass I caught went way up. It was awesome.  I still fish everything from ned rigs to 10 inch swimbaits.  Biggest for me is 7.8. Worst part is I KNOW IVE HOOKED 8s! No doubt in my mind. Sadly it been a few years since I’ve hooked into some giants. Haven’t broken 6lbs in. 3 years.  Lots of bass 3-4s lbs on swimbaits now
