Crackintubes Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 New metanium MGL skips well, as well as the older model, Bantam MGL does good, DC reels. Just have to fidget with the settings to find the reels sweet spot. Dc reels by far the easiest. Or, you can go the other route, and use little to no tension, and master use of the "thumb" Quote

I don't want to slip light. I don't like the frame size of the dc reels all that much. I'm looking for an sv type reel in a shimano for dock skipping. Quote

Closest is DC but in my opinion they are not that great for skipping as sometimes on short skips the DC system doesn't have time to kick in. Why not just get an SV reel? Quote

Yep, that would solve it, or get a SV spool for an existing Daiwa reel (if eligible). My Steez A with the Steez SV spool is an amazing skipper and also provides great pitching capabilities. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted September 30, 2020 Super User Posted September 30, 2020 So I have the Daiwa Steez SV TWS, Shimano Bantam, the Antares 70A, and Curado DC.... When you compare these reels for skipping, the 70A with the MGL III spool is the pretty good but the DC sometimes in certain conditions is better, so between those two it's a toss up. The Bantam is not bad either but just isn't as goos as the other two. Now between the Steez and Antares 70A for skipping, you can backlash both of these reels depending on the lure and the rod but in the end I like both. My favorite jigs to use are from V & M and Dirty Jigs (don't care for the Strike King skipping jig) and a beaver type trailer trimmed down a bit. Quote
Bandersnatch Posted October 1, 2020 Author Posted October 1, 2020 Why not an aldebaran mgl for skipping? Isn't the allure of the sv the shallow spool? Quote
lunkerboss923 Posted January 1, 2022 Posted January 1, 2022 I think anything in the mgl class will get it done. The Chronarch or Curado 150 MGL are great for skipping. Quote
Super User WRB Posted January 1, 2022 Super User Posted January 1, 2022 You don’t need to go high to skip lures. Shimano SLK MGL 70 is small and very good reel for skipping lures. Tom 2 Quote
