Here are my candidates for an all - around bait cast line when I just want to grab a rod & reel and go :

  • P-Line CXX #12 lb.
  • Yo-Zuri Hybrid #12 lb.
  • Stren Original #14 lb.
  • Berkley Big Game #12 lb.

*Which would be your choice (or another of your liking) for light cover to  open water using crank baits , chatter baits , spinner baits , T-Rig worms , top water , etc. ?

YZH 10#. While 12# isn't overkill, the 10# will be an all around better line for what you are describing.

I use 10#YZH on my Trion-35 (3000 size). 12# also is my leader material for my two braid rigs.

For many years my old stand by line was BPS Excel 14 lb green mono.  I still use only BPS Excel 8lb mono on my spinning reels.  Good, reliable line.

90% of my baitcasters are loaded with 15# Invisx. The others have lighter Tatsu or Smackdown braid.

First - there isn't any such thing as an all around line and there is no need for one.  Like your shop teacher told you in high school - use the right tool for the job.  There are enough lines out there designed for different fishing techniques that an all around line is both silly and unnecessary.

For me, Yo-zuri at 15 lb test, is decent spinner bait/square bill/ chatterbait line.   That is what I currently have on my 2 Curado DC reels.  Original Stren - maybe, if it was the only thing left on the shelves  AND I was totally out of my line supply in my fishing shed and my in truck supply.

The other 2 brands - Big Game & P Line - no way - I've had too many bad experiences with them to ever ever give them another chance.  I wouldn't use them even to hang picture frames.   Not even doubled up or tripled up or quintupled up, no matter was lb test that line was alleged to be.  That stuff is junk.

Having said that - everyone starts somewhere.  If you only got one bait casting reel, just pick a line and use that.  People have caught fish doing that.   That is what I did when I only had one bait caster.  These days, that isn't the case, so my circumstances shape my judgement.

If Big Game or P line is all you can afford, well then, get it and hope for the best.   If you can afford better line - get that instead and avoid the anger/frustration/shame of using those brands.

I always liked Stren green Lo-Vis #14 as an all around general purpose line.

However now a days I find a spool of 30lb braid and a spool of 14lb FC to be better.

Either use the 30lb braid straight, tie on a 14lb leader, or use straight 14lb FC. Covers 90% of my needs.

*My shop teacher had missing fingers ! ... Usually the only thing negative people have to say about Big Game or CXX is a possible memory issue ?

Lots of flexibility with braid + different FC , Co-Poly  leader sizes .

Truth is, some anglers simply abhor tying leaders and prefer one line from reel to lure. That’s just the way it is. It may not be “perfect” for every application, but for some, it’s the choice they’ve made.

Not so long ago, unless you were fly fishing or after toothy quarry, it was de riguer to have one line filling your spool. And that was mono.

It caught fish.

Really lol as I just got back into fishing after a almost 30-year hiatus. Long enough that once I checked out BR, I learned about braid and FC, which may have been available back then but nobody I knew used them. Everyone used mono.

But, what the hell. At least now I’m using copoly. But I still get stares hunting with aluminum arrows!
