waymont Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 I received my 2020 Tatula SV tw in the 8.1:1 speed. I took it out of the box, and it felt pretty dry on the gears but still smooth. I opened it up to take a look inside. I found there was zero grease on the gears, and zero oil in the bearings. I put some grease on the gears, and light touches of oil on the bearings. Twice as smooth afterwards, and it felt good before, now it feels fantastic. Just putting this out there for anyone who gets a new one. It's probably a good idea to check it out before you fish it. It's a super comfortable, smooth reel. 1 Quote
GReb Posted September 29, 2020 Posted September 29, 2020 Mine had grease but was very a thin layer. After adding some lubrication it has performed flawlessly. 1 Quote
5by3 Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 Had the same experience with mine. Mine fished terribly right out of the box. Took it inside for some grease and oil and feels great now. 1 Quote
Hook2Jaw Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 I might need to crack mine open, though it's been great so far. Quote
Big Rick Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 I was sure hoping there would be some pictures.... Quote
Crackintubes Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 Mine was very dry as well. Lubed her up and she's good to go. Very nice reel, better than previous gen IMO 2 hours ago, Big Rick said: I was sure hoping there would be some pictures.... NathanDLTH Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 My Zillion 10 was practically bone dry when I got, same with a 2020 Tatula SV and Tatula SV Quote
DomQ Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 Every daiwa I've ever opened other then the new zillion HD was bone dry! Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted October 1, 2020 Super User Posted October 1, 2020 I own three older Tatula SV reels. Both 6.3:1s are as smooth as any reel I've ever used but the 7.1:1 (or is it 7.3:1?) wasn't nearly as smooth for the same reason. I think they may have a small QC issue with greasing reels, but nothing that's difficult to fix. I'll likely pick up a couple of 2020 models for next season to add some more versatility to my setup. TERRIBLE QC if it turns out to be a systemic issue and there are enough reports here to make one wonder. The gear sets are not nearly as big an issue as the bearings. You will get all kinds of false brenelling from the lack of lube between the ring and rolling elements. Leading to shortened life spans. Curious if any of the local reel guys who mess with these all the time, have noticed this as well? Quote

Curious if any of the local reel guys who mess with these all the time, have noticed this as well? I have noticed this as well on the tatula line. I wouldn't call them rough or bad, opposite in fact, however, a good clean and oil seems to help. That said, I spin the handle once when they are new out of the box, and immediately take them apart and do a clean, oil, and grease job, so can't say I've seen effects long-term. Quote
Super User Hammer 4 Posted October 1, 2020 Super User Posted October 1, 2020 This makes think I need to open up my Tatula 200 reels, if for no other reason to check the lube situation. On edit: Opened em up and all is good. I had forgotten that I polished the spool shaft, and added oil..duh! Quote
Super User iabass8 Posted October 1, 2020 Super User Posted October 1, 2020 And to think I was mocked a year ago for bringing this to peoples attention that it’s going to be and will continue to be an issue with new Daiwa....weird. 2 Quote
thunderblack Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 Guys....I know this been mentioned hundreds of times but I'll say it one more time.....buy Shimano Quote

I said small QC issue because it can be easily resolved, although I have few doubts it's systemic at this point. Terrible QC would mean you bought a brand new reel and it's no more useful than a glorified paper weight. Quote
GReb Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 Daiwa advises that you run their reels on the dry side. They advise a very thin layer of grease on interior parts applied with a paintbrush and one small drop of oil per bearing. They say anything more is unnecessary. Consistency is the issue I’ve seen with the 5 or 6 I’ve bought. One will come from the box perfectly lubricated and the next will have a tad less or more. I haven’t had a bone dry one yet though. Dens228 Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 I have all Tatula SV TW's and Elites, I really need to learn how to service them beyond the basic oiling. I'm afraid of taking it apart and never getting it back together again. Quote

I don't mind opening up a new reel, I do it anyway with every reel. Of the 10 or so other Daiwa reels I have this is the only one that needed grease. Quote
looking45 Posted October 1, 2020 Posted October 1, 2020 If it were me, since they offered to replace it, I'm sending it back. But, as mentioned, I would send it back right away, while they offer is there. Look at it this way. Would you buy this rod if you noticed this damage? If yes, then keep the rod. Quote

They generate far more complaints than Daiwa. On 9/30/2020 at 12:50 PM, Crackintubes said: Mine was very dry as well. Lubed her up and she's good to go. For sure, this was pic before I had it all torn down to the frame and cleaned. The main gear wasn't really too bad, I'd say just enough. 1 Quote
