one of these reels i have is starting to mess up and never had one to do this so was wondering could anyone help. it cast great 90% of the time but sometimes when i go to cast its like the spool goes into free spool and makes a high pitch noise. doesnt sound like this normally. could there be an issue with the brakes? never adjusted the brakes on these reels much like i do on the ones with the dial on the side.

thanks

Aside from the noise, does everything else work normally?

Sounds like the yoke is not entirely disengaged.      jj

Oil the brake drum as instructed on the yellow sheet they include with the reel. "I" series Shimanos are notorious for this brake noise.

I second this

If the hub trick doesn't do it, you'll have to add a drop of oil to spool support bearings.  The only other thing would be a bent spool or frame, causing rubbing, or something catastrophic inside, but I don't think it's either of those, if everything else works fine.
