I destructively test one or two hooks every time I try a new brand/type/size, but this only lets me compare them (roughly) to other hooks that I use, it doesn’t give me a real sense of the actual force involved. I’ve learned through experience how to roughly gauge the relative strength of line versus hooks for smaller lines/hooks because when I’m wading I would much rather bend/break a hook and have to replace a jighead then break off my leader and have to re-tie it while standing waist deep in water, so I try to err on the side of thicker lines and thinner hooks. I’ve done a lot of my own testing on hooks I use and there is some interesting stuff to be learned by it. Not many people probably have any idea just how many pounds of pressure it takes to bend out certain hooks, hook styles, or even differences based on hooking location/penetration...but again, the way most people set and rely on their drags these days takes some of that off the table. I'm using a pretty dependable crazy Alberto knot between the main line, and the leader so I thought it was pretty safe/secure. What needs to be corrected so that I can get my leader back next time it happens? Have not read all of the replies but I have a Pro's Secret to share with you: After tying any line to another line, use a drop of fast drying super glue to help hold the knot together. And you can do this with your knot to the bait, too. It has to be fast drying glue so you can use it while fishing. Quote

A well known bass pro showed me this trick three years ago and I have used it ever since. Never had a knot fail since I used the glue. Only problem is finding glue that 1) has a brush applicator and 2) does not dry out in the bottle. 2 hours ago, Eddie101 said: Good idea! Drop some brand names if you can. Read the directions on the bottle to get an idea of how fast the glue will set. 1 Quote

If I use 20 lb leader, that I use in saltwater, it ties fine but not the lighter leader. I use FG knots all the time but on my finesse setup it’s more trouble than it’s worth. Going 15 lb braid to 8 lb fluoro I just use a uni to uni. Quote

It let's you get the braid tag super flush Quote
