bassbandit2 Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 I have a Daiwa SS SV and a Daiwa Tatula Elite on the way. I'm looking to see which would be better for weighted/weightless plastics? I use 1/16 and 1/8 tungsten bullet weights pending on conditions(I fish ponds). Any info greatly appreciated. Quote
Lead Head Posted September 26, 2020 Posted September 26, 2020 There are several people who will be able to help you out on this... I'm not one of them. I will however tell you they will need to know if the SS is a 103 or 105. It will matter. Quote

I've also swapped the inductor with a zillion SV one you can buy from Tackle Trap. Thank you Quote
Lead Head Posted September 27, 2020 Posted September 27, 2020 I'm pretty new to the Daiwa game and have limited experience but ill go ahead and share what little I've learned from my SS. I don't know what the inductor swap did to free up the spool in your SS, but my SS (103) is absolutely not a long casting reel. If distance is a concern I wouldn't use the SS without getting a longer casting spool. I have the 8.1.1. gear and carbontex drag upgrade from TT in mine and use it for pitching and skipping jigs, distance isn't a concern for me. Quote

I've read about people swapping spools for the the Zillion SV TW G1 spool from TT and making it a much better casting reel. I just might have to to that. I appreciate your info. Quote
Lead Head Posted September 27, 2020 Posted September 27, 2020 If you are confident in that spool go for it. If you search these forums you can find a thread with a few other recommendations. Quote
Super User JustJames Posted September 28, 2020 Super User Posted September 28, 2020 Man those Daiwa guys might be on vacation? Let me share some info, but please don’t quote me, I have limited experience with Daiwa as well. I never fish the new Tatula but have SS SV 103. First of all, they both not true finesse reel oriented, to expect those reel to play well with light weight lure gonna be tough. If I have to choose one, SS SV might get my vote, both should be able to handle 1/8 weight Texas rig but gonna be tougher on 1/16oz. Some say “reel just hold the line, ROD to cast lure” This is true (might not be 100%) meaning ppl give too much attention to reel than rod, in many cases rod is as important if not more than reel to be able to cast especially light lure effectively. You don’t mention about the rod, so it gonna be hard to tell if you are capable of casting such weight. Let talk about your SS SV, you said you swap inductor with zillion one, did you swap just inductor or spring as well? I don’t own Zillion SV but I think SS SV spool also G1 spool???? How the cast after swapped? You might not see much different, if you swapped both inductor and spring. If only inductor you might not get all distance but you get more control. I swapped mine with only Ray’s inductor and I’m happy with it for combination of distance and control, I fish a lot at night where control is needed. Since you gonna have both reels anyway give it a try yourself, you might be surprises of what you and the reels are capable off. Quote
bassbandit2 Posted September 28, 2020 Author Posted September 28, 2020 I didn't swap the spring! I'm not sure where I can get the better spring. Fort the rod it's on is a 7'1" med St Croix Mojo Bass. I was able to cast the zoom trick and smaller finesse worms with 1/16 oz and weightless into a little wind. I wouldn't say I broke any records, but an alright distance for light baits and wind coming at me. I'll have to give the Tatula Elite a try and see what it can do. Where can I get the inductor spring? Would replacing the bearings help in these reels? They are going to be my plastics reels. I also have a 7'1"med heavy St Croix Mojo Bass one will be going on that won't be for the lighter plastics. More for 1/8 oz and senko style and bigger creature baits. Thank your for your info Quote
Super User JustJames Posted September 28, 2020 Super User Posted September 28, 2020 If you can cast weightless trick worm with your current setup into wind, I don’t think you would need to do anything else. I’m not sure how soft on the tip of that rod (is your Fast or Moderate action?). BTW the st Croix Moderate rod got super soft and flex tip section, very good for light weight lure. If you plan to fish a lot of weightless worm, I recommend M or ML fast rod, that has lure rates down to 1/8oz. . Changing bearing? a lot will say it help, which it should, but I just don’t give them many thought. I believe using lighter line would help better. I have at Croix avid x Medium/Moderate, that rod can cast way below lure rates, but I don’t like using moderate action rod with Texas rig style worm (fast action is better to dive the hook into roof of bass mouth. bassbandit2 Posted September 29, 2020 Author Posted September 29, 2020 The St Croix rod is fast action. I do not like moderate action rods either, especially for plastics. I always have used 8 lb p-line cxx on my plastics rods but thought about using 6lb to see if there is any difference. Maybe I'll leave the reel as is! Thanks for your help! Quote
bassbandit2 Posted September 29, 2020 Author Posted September 29, 2020 As far as more of a finesse reel I'm thinking of going with the new Tatula SV. I should be able to accomplish similar to what I can with my SS SV. What are your thoughts? Quote

You should try one of the Alphas SV 105. The Alphas SV 105 is long discontinued so you might have to get use 140-170, or act now Plat Japan have alphas CT SV on sale, about 200 OTD. Quote
