I’m looking at getting a new rod for tx rigs and jigs. I’m between the mojo bass and the avid x. Is the avid x worth the extra 80ish bucks over the mojo? I appreciate your input.

Im pretty sure the mojo and the avid actually use the same quality graphite in the blanks.  Whether they share the same blanks IDK.  I have a couple mojos and a couple older Avids.  Surprisingly the Mojos weigh less then an Avid of similar length/power and the difference is more then a couple grams.  Even though the Mojos are lighter, in hand the Avids feel about the same weight because they balance a little better. The components on the Avid are better then that of the Mojo.  I prefer the Avid over the Mojo, but that's just personal preference.  I bought a 7'1 M F Muse on a whim last cyber Monday.  I regretted ordering it until i actually got my hands on it.  I actually like it more then my Avid.  The 13 Omen Black 3 @ $130 uses the same 36T blank as the Muse so there light, sensitive, great actions and a comfortable reel seat.  If your set on a St. Croix, see if you can find a dealer that has the Avids and Mojos so you can compare them.  Good Luck....Tight Lines.

I have quite a few Mojos, 1st and 2nd gen and they are really good durable rods. I use them for all techniques and they perform as expected. The 2nd gen was a good improvement over the first gen. I don’t own avid x but I have fished with several and I do own older full grip avids  and a new legend tournament.  I like all my st. croixs, the legend is a beautiful rod, but it’s pretty overrated for what it costs, I would never pay retail for it. To me the Avid and Avid X are where St. Croix shines especially if you want a USA stamp on it. The balance on the regular Avid is the best in the Croix pinup imo. Avid X fishes very nice as well, a little better balance that comparable mojo models, but I think that’s about the biggest difference. I think you are mostly paying for the USA stamp, which I’d be ok with. Some say the guides are bad on the avid x, I don’t know, never had issues with guides on any rod I can remember owning in recent years.

The Mojo has 8 guides, the Avid-X has 9, plus the micro guides on the Avid-X are smaller and lighter. So sensitivity should theoretically be better with the Avid-X, which would be important to you with the bottom-contact techniques mentioned.

However, you asked about the value of the $80 difference. That's something that, unfortunately, only you can answer.       jj

They are made with the same graphite but they are not the same blanks.  Mojos are rolled in St Croix's Mexico facility.  The Avids are rolled in Wisconsin.

IMHO the Avid X line is like the Shimano Expride line, they punch way up above their price category.  I think the Avid X line of spinning rods is exceptional, with the only drawback being the micro guides for us Braid to Leader guys.  But from a sensitivity and action standpoint, I think the Avid X line is way more responsive and sensitive than the Mojo line.  Not sure if that matters enough to you to pay the price premium one over the other, but I can tell you the Avid X fishes like a rod that costs $100 more than it does.

I'm hearing the Avid-X is going to be discontinued in favor of a new series called VICTORY.

That’s interesting. Just my opinion, I think St. Croix has way too many rod models and similar price points. Years ago they had 3, good, better, best. Kinda how Kistler and Alx does it. Like bass x and mojo and even premier. Just have one line, and offer split grip or full grip depending on model. Do you know when these new rods are to be released?

Think the Victory might be coming in at around $200 or a wee bit less.

I "think" they may shooting for a spring 2021 release.

Dollar for dollar, the Mojo Bass is a much better value - as others mentioned, they do have the same blanks. That said for more vertical style presentations like T-Rigs and Jigs and of course assuming you fish these as often as I do, I would say the Avid X very well may be worth the extra money, or perhaps the Avid which has better guides (unless you really prefer microguides). Also it's easy to justify as well since the Avids are made in the US.
