SpinLight Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 What is your favorite jig head weight for the TRD Ned rig, thrown in 15-25 ft. of water? I am throwing it on 6 lb. test mono this time of year. Rocky, deep, upland southern lake for spotted bass. Thanks for sharing. (I also fish shallow this time of year, but have that covered.) Quote
Super User Bird Posted September 24, 2020 Super User Posted September 24, 2020 I only throw 1/15 - 1/16 oz shrooms. 2 1 Quote
BoatSquirrel Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 At that depth, 3/16 has been my best bite getter. 1 Quote
Smokinal Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 For me it's all about wind. If it's slick, I'll use the 1/15 down to 25' Any breeze and I step it up accordingly to keep bottom contact and feel. Too breezy and I either go shallow or change baits/presentation altogether. 2 1 Quote

Super User Teal Posted September 24, 2020 Super User Posted September 24, 2020 I have several sizes, but 1/10 I'll throw at any depth. If it gets breezy or current gets heavy, I'm not afraid to go up to even as high as 3/16. But I'm not running super light line either...I'm running 8lb test 1 Quote
GetFishorDieTryin Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I prefer braid with a 10 or 12 foot fluro leader. The are 2 important reasons to use braid IMO. Braid is more sensitive then mono or fluro so you have a better idea of the bottom composition. If you use a tungsten head you can feel just about everything. You don't always have contact with the bait which makes it harder to feel subtle bites. Braid allows you to see whats going on even if you cant feel it. 3/32 or 1/10 is about as heavy as I go. 1 hour ago, Smokinal said: For me it's all about wind. Right on. Wind dictates the weight of the jighead far more then depth. 1 1 Quote
looking45 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 I'll use the lightest one I can get away with, depending on the wind, as others have said. If there's no wind, 1/16 oz, regardless of depth 1 1 Quote
Super User Team9nine Posted September 25, 2020 Super User Posted September 25, 2020 As stated, depends on weather/wind a lot (not so much for size, but as to whether I’ll even throw it or not at those depths), but 3/32nd is as heavy as I go. That said, I’ve got friends that throw what I would consider ridiculously heavy heads and still catch fish, so it might not matter in the big scheme of things if you’re simply looking for feel and control at those depths. 2 1 Quote
BoatSquirrel Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 For those who throw lighter heads, do yall swim the bait rather than work it on the bottom? 1 Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted September 25, 2020 Super User Posted September 25, 2020 1/16 and 3/32 are the weights that I use the most no matter the depth. I use the Midwest Finesse head that I pour. 1 Quote
frogflogger Posted September 26, 2020 Posted September 26, 2020 I use light heads - I don't care if I feel the bottom as I am rarely in contact with it - instead I try to drift/swim the lure just above the bottom touching only rarely. You can do this from the back of the boat behind a power fisherman and have good results. This has worked for me for decades. 2 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted September 27, 2020 Super User Posted September 27, 2020 I only carry 1/16oz and 1/8oz ned rig jig heads. For 15-25ft of water, I would usually go with the 1/8oz unless I know I'm targeting water closer to 15ft most of the time. I could make an argument for something a bit heavier, maybe 1/5 or 1/6oz so it can get down to the bottom faster and that is also legitimate depending how you are fishing it and where the bass are holed up. 1 Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 27, 2020 Global Moderator Posted September 27, 2020 1/16oz, regardless of depth or wind. 2 1 Quote
