Smokinal Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 My son called me last night from college to tell me about a fishing survey he took on as a project/paper for a marketing class he's in. He asked me if I would post it on my forum so here it is. 1. How often do you go fishing? 2. What type of fishing do you usually do? (fresh, salt, target species) 3. How do you hear about new products? Social media? Friends? Online? 4. When buying a new product what makes you finally decide to purchase it? Reviews? Friends Recommendations? 5. Where did you usually shop pre covid-19? In stores? Online? 6. Does the fishing industry have enough gadgets? 7. How much do you spend yearly on fishing equipment Glenn/mods, if this is against the rules I completely understand; delete as needed if so. Thank you folks! 1 Quote
BigAngus752 Posted September 24, 2020 Posted September 24, 2020 1. How often do you go fishing? Every chance I get. That's not a cop-out. I mean it literally. Occasionally I'll get out twice a week, but occasionally it's only twice a month. My minimum goal is once per week. 2. What type of fishing do you usually do? (fresh, salt, target species) Bass. Sometimes when I'm bass fishing I'll start catching bluegill for fun for a little while but I never go out for anything but bass. 3. How do you hear about new products? Social media? Friends? Online? The vast majority of my info comes from word of mouth (friends) and from BR. 4. When buying a new product what makes you finally decide to purchase it? Reviews? Friends Recommendations? Online reviews and reviews on BR make the largest impact on my decisions when I can't try something for myself. 5. Where did you usually shop pre covid-19? In stores? Online? Both, and the plague has had little affect on where I shop. 6. Does the fishing industry have enough gadgets? Does a woman have enough mood swings? I'm overwhelmed by both. 7. How much do you spend yearly on fishing equipment? That's a good question. My rough estimate is $1000 for strictly "fishing equipment" but it could be twice that. Factoring in boat maintenance, lake stickers, licenses, etc. it continues to go up from there. 1 Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted September 24, 2020 Super User Posted September 24, 2020 1.how often do you go fishing? Completely depends on time of year. Spring and fall it could easily be 3 or 4 times a week. Winter is ice fishing time and will often only go a few times a month. If say averaged out it would be 2 times a week. 2.what type of fishing do you usually do? Always freshwater for me...I live in Iowa. Id say it's bass 9 times out of 10 during the open water season. Thru the ice it's crappies and bluegills or perch. 3.how do you hear about new products? Social media? Friends? Online? Most of it comes from right here on bassresource. Also I get some info from youtube. 4.when buying a new product what makes you finally decide to purchase it? Reviews? Friend reccomendations? Again for me it's a combination of thing...first I'll research it on BR or YouTube from a few guys I trust. Also I consider does it even fit my style of fishing. I only have one buddy...who is also a member here...who is a basshead like me so when he suggests something I listen because we fish the same waters. 5.where did you usually shop pre covid? In store? Online? Almost all of it online for the past several years. They just have what I want in the sizes or colors I want and I don't have to drive an hour each way. My big 3 are...tackle warehouse, fishing skirts.com and siebert outdoors. 6.does the fishing industry have enough gadgets? Too many 7.how much do you spend yearly on fishing equipment? Depends on the year. Most years around a grand. If I'm replacing rods and reels maybe two grand. 1 Quote

Super User MN Fisher Posted September 24, 2020 Super User Posted September 24, 2020 1. How often do you go fishing? Anytime I can - try for once a week, but home situation varies. Reviews? Friends Recommendations? Reviews here and the couple web-sites I visit on occasiona. 5. Where did you usually shop pre covid-19? In stores? Online? Online for 95%+, occasional stops in local stores, but most of my purchasing has been through Amazon and TW 6. Does the fishing industry have enough gadgets? There's always room for improvement...though most of the things coming out lately have been out of my budget. 7. How much do you spend yearly on fishing equipment? I get $1000 from the parents every year as a Yule gift...that's my total budget for fishing gear and canoe upgrades for the following year. 1 Quote

JohnFromLisbon Posted September 25, 2020 Posted September 25, 2020 1. How often do you go fishing? Maybe twice a month. I live in a big city, the closest bass lake is at least an hour's drive away and my favorite lake is 3 hours away. 2. What type of fishing do you usually do? Freshwater fishing for largemouth bass. 3. How do you hear about new products? Social media? Friends? Online? Online, mostly. It takes longer for us to get stuff in local stores, so I rely on US sites for info. 4. When buying a new product what makes you finally decide to purchase it? Reviews? Friends Recommendations? I look for every review out there, and might even post here on BassResource to get some of your opinions. I get buyers' remorse when I get batteries, so every purchase is thoroughly vetted. 5. Where did you usually shop pre covid-19? In stores? Online? It's 50/50. I have a few local stores I like to support, but I also make several orders from TW over the year (and get slapped with fees and taxes from customs driving the cost to almost twice what I pay in USD, but it's totally worth it). 6. Does the fishing industry have enough gadgets? There's always room for something new, but the industry is rife with gimmicks. 7. How much do you spend yearly on fishing equipment The last few years I've averaged 1500 EUR (~1750 USD). 1 Quote

Where did you usually shop pre covid-19? In stores? Online? 6. Does the fishing industry have enough gadgets? 7. How much do you spend yearly on fishing equipment 1) I go an average of about twice a week. 2) I primarily fish fresh water for bass, but try to get a trip in for salmon or trout. 3) I find out about new products from magazines, television programs and commercials, friends, online and the BR community. 4) I decide whether or not to purchase a new product if it’ll fill a need/want, is it conducive to my fishing style, target species and where I fish. I will also take into account the opinions of friends who have tried the product and those of BR members. 5) I would usually shop pre-Covid-19 for fishing tackle at brick and mortar stores or online. 6) I guess the answer would depend on one’s definition of “enough gadgets” would be. In my opinion innovation is good and gadgets in there various forms add to my enjoyment of fishing. 7) I will plead the 5th on this one, as Mr. Jones (the bait monkey) suggests I do at this time. I’d like to add the ancillary costs of a yearly fishing license, boat and vehicle maintenance and insurance, an average of a gallon a month of Optimax oil, and the fuel for the boat/vehicles to take me fishing are equally essential equipment of which I have no idea what that be over the course of a year. @Smokinal, I hope my answers and those of fellow BR members are of help to your son with his research project. Continued good fishing, JB 1 Quote
Super User Boomstick Posted September 25, 2020 Super User Posted September 25, 2020 1. How often do you go fishing? Normally when it's not frozen, at least every weekend. (fresh, salt, target species) Freshwater primarily for bass but will occasionally target trout and perch. 3. How do you hear about new products? Social media? Friends? Online? Sometimes from talking with people, these forums, various Youtubers reviews and sometimes online ads 4. When buying a new product what makes you finally decide to purchase it? Reviews? Where did you usually shop pre covid-19? In stores? Online? Both online and in stores. I prefer to support local stores but Tackle Warehouse's extensive selection is too hard to pass up. 6. How much do you spend yearly on fishing equipment I probably average around $1000 on rods, reels and tackle, but if you add the kayaks I bought this year that's going way up. 1 Quote
