Recently got a bad spool of powerpro and now I’m considering changing braids. What’s the best type of braid for the money?

Posted

Only use 1 brand? Heck most all are good. I wouldn’t switch because u have one bad spool. I mix it up between power pro and suffix 832. I like suffix 832 for some applications being 8 strand and power pro for others. I do want to try Seaguar smack down as well.

Where does Suffix excel?

"This amazingly thin diameter line is made with 8 ultra-thin, micro-weave strands in a round, smooth-casting profile for smooth and exceptionally quiet, laser-like casts. And you get exceptional knot and tensile strength with unparalleled abrasion resistance."

If I wasn't on a budget, I'd give Smackdown a try - but as it's twice the price of 832 or Power Pro...I'll stick with those two for now. Though I am considering going all 832...seems to be easier to tie than the PP and limper.

Best is a relative term.
I use original Power Pro even tho some say there are better options.
There may be, but I haven’t had a problem and even if I do, I have no intention of changing.

Still have a few reels spooled with Fenwick Ironthread...got it way back in the day. Good stuff, can't wear it out.

I do have some Power Pro and Spiderwire, but Ironthread is my favorite. I think I have one new spool left in storage now.

Ya I’m going to give 832 a try. Also looking forward to 131 coming out.

Suffix excels just as Seaguar users have quoted. You really have try any of these brands. 832 and Seaguar are 8 strand verse standard power pro being 4 .. for me I like heavier pound power pro for a lot of top water and heavy cover and 832 for all else. There no real right or wrong.. everyone has there own preference and  confidence in there lines/lures of choice . Some anglers flat out just like the feel of a certain lines and that’s it .

I use 832 and haven't had any issues.

I've used kastking, power pro, and 832. Of the 3 832 is my favorite. It really gives you very little to complain about. It is the only 8 strand braid I've used and felt no need to try another.

I would have to say kastking is the best bang for your buck. It can be found for $6 shipped fairly often and compares favorably to power pro in 4 strand (in my opinion).

I usually use PowerPro original - it goes on sale routinely and comes in yellow and green.  Not the quietest through the guides or the roundest, but neither of those things bothers me too much. I have used Tuff Line 4orce, and that is a lot like PowerPro without the waxy coating and it's not so dyed so much (you can look at that as good or bad - PowerPro always leaves some residue on your hands when it's new).  If both are full retail, the Tuff Line is a little cheaper and I don't see the downside.  As far as 832 and other 8+ carrier braids, I have tried several.  They stay rounder, I guess, and are quieter passing through the guides than these 2.  Maybe they cast farther.  But they cost more and don't cut through vegetation as well, so I end up hung more with them.  So for a good deal, PowerPro and 4orce are the 2 best I've come across.

Best is relative

you never hear anything bad about 832 except is fades a tad.

Dont be afraid to look at Fins and Gamma.  Since you can buy in bulk, cost can be considerably lower.

my experience with smack down has been marginal and one of the few lines I have broken off

I just got new combo spinning , so I tried for first time samurai braid, but all my combos have power pro and they are the best in my idea, I use maxquatro for all my freshwater and spectra for salt water.

I fish braid 100% of the time, I have tried several but Suffix 832 was the winner I have settled on. I haven't tried Power Pro Maxquattro or the Seaguar yet, but have heard good things.

Depends on the application. I don't use anything by Sufix Nano Braid, on my spinning reels.  It is the most manageable (no wind knots or nests on the reel), longest casting, durable and it takes a knot really well (I am a braid to leader guy) braid I have found for spinning reel applications.  It is available up to 14lbs, which is truly all you need for 90% of spinning applications.  That said, you can't go wrong with Sufix 832 or standard Power Pro braid.  Both are outstanding.

That said, I can say based on personal experience stay away from Daiwa's high end braid (frays and wind knots like crazy) and Sunline's high end braid (same experience as with Daiwa).  By high end, I mean their 8 carrier, plus, line of braids.  Just my humble opinion based on thousands of casts using many different rods and reels.

Been a long time 832 user, but picked up some Daiwa J Braid in a pinch and like it just as well.

I think Fins and Vicious no-fade are worth the money, because they don't fade, so I think I get a bunch more time. 832 was great on everything but the fade - but if wanted white braid I'd buy white braid, and if I wanted to color with markers I'd get a coloring book :)

On Fins I like the sling braid better than the windtamer, because it much smoother. It is really soft though so if you don't like soft braid get the windtamer.

I got some daiwa j-braid 4-carrier braid free with a reel, so I've been using it for frog line, and it isn't fading yet. The fins and vicious are too smooth for cutting weeds.

If I was going to try something else it would be maxcuatro.

I use hi vis 832 and I'm happy with it. Some discoloration in the first few feet but that's to be expected. It handles really well on spinning tackle for me
