TriStateBassin106 Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 Has the bite for you guys changed from being shallow and parallel to the bank to out deep or near the middle of ponds you fish? I fish two relatively small ponds near me. One is a simple retention pond with a fountain and max depth of 8ft. The other pond is part of a public park with 3 fountains and a max depth of 15ft, these two ponds are mostly featureless v shaped bottoms and some scattered peaces of cover that usually produce in the summer when casting parallel or around the cover. But for the past week and a half all my bites have either been in the "middle" or near deep pockets around the fountains. Is this normal for bass to migrate to the deeper pockets during the fall/fall transition? Am I the only one who is catching them out deep? And do the fish still stay shallow? Quote

Honestly most of my bites the last week have been in super shallow water...caught 7 this morning with a buddy...deepest water we got bit in was maybe 3ft Quote
rtwvumtneer6 Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 Where are you from? First real cold snap came through for me. Caught 20 yesterday, today is bluebird skies and cool air arrived. Still getting bit shallow but they're tight to cover. Trying to belly up to anything holding heat since the shallow water will cool quicker. Could be they moved to deeper water for you. I tend to have success if I can find brush piles in deeper water, near the shallow water this time of year. Any remaining vegetation shallow should hold some fish, but you might want to slow down and down size. Just a few thoughts. Quote
Glaucus Posted September 19, 2020 Posted September 19, 2020 In Indiana I've caught 40+ over the last few trips no further than 5-10 feet from the bank. I can't find a bite out further than that. Quote

Cold with temps not even breaking 70? Yup sounds about right, just be ready though because this hot bite is an anomaly and will end as quickly as it began once the temps go up again. Quote
Super User BrianMDTX Posted September 19, 2020 Super User Posted September 19, 2020 I’m having problems just getting bites. Fished from before 7:00 and ended around 2:00. Caught two dinks and missed two hookups. Both dinks were shallow. One on a 5” Senko WR and the other a weightless 9” Mann’s Jelly Worm. The two misses were both on a Zoom Trick Worm TR. All were weak bites. It’s been tough the past month or so. I tried topwater, spinnerbaits, jigs and swimbaits. Nothin’ at all. Quote

The Bassman Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Except for real shallow water temps haven't moved much from summer. I do find this time of year to be tough for catching big bass. Plenty of pounders though. I fish ponds like you describe. Quote
Super User Bankbeater Posted September 20, 2020 Super User Posted September 20, 2020 I've only been catching one or two bass each trip since the start of Sept. My only good day was right after Labor Day when the temps back up into the low 90's. Quote
