Waking a grub

So one of the techniques I accidentally discovered is that you can turn a regular old grub into a wakebait.  I don't have room onboard right now for another combo dedicated to top water, so I'm trying to figure out what the biggest hook I can float with a 3 or 4" grub.  Right now I'm using a size 4 Aberdeen hook, but the day is going to come when I straighten that bitty thing out.  I plan on experimenting myself with different sized hooks, but I was thinking maybe the community could help me save a little time here.  Do you float grubs?  What size hook can you float?

Not grubs, but I use a Ragetail Spacemonkey in much the same way.  Sort of like a finesse toad.  Works great when the damselflies are doing their thing in the summer heat.

Pretty sure I use a 3/0 or 4/0 Owner Rigging hook.

I have used 5 inch grubs as top waters before, they bubble right along the surface . Its been awhile and I cant tell you what hook I was using . Some kind of offset worm hook , about as long as the body . I texas rigged them . River smallmouths ate that thing up .

I wake  3” white grubs a lot at night in early spring and late fall while bank fishing since threadfin shad is the main forage in our urban ponds.  1/8 oz jig heads with the rod tip pointed towards 10:00.  Very finessey technique that I don’t hear a lot of anglers talk about..... If that doesn’t work, I’ll impart the same wake-like retrieval technique but with a micro chatterbait with a split tail trailer.

The only grubs I use are the Zoom Fat Albert 3" grubs. I rig mine on a 1/0 Gama Skip Gap hook. I have never tried waking them. May have to try it and see what happens.

4-5" Kalin lunker grubs run on top with a 3/0 hook for sure, just cast them out and retrieve steady and they will wake right on top. I usually use an 1/8 or 3/16 oz jighead to run them a little deeper, but with speed the 1/8 oz will still come to surface. They are deadly where bass see all types of large flashly and noisy lures daily but the lowly grub don't get fished as much anymore. Sort of a finesse style bait, I've caught some nice large and smallmouth on grubs.
