Randy Price Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Been and am a SC fanboy but was recently at a Scheel's and they carry Dobyn's rods. I was going to buy a Mojo Bass but decided to try the Fury 703C. Fished with it over the weekend and wasn't impressed. I guess I'm spoiled by normally fishing with higher end SC rods but the sensitivity just wasn't what I'm used to. I wasn't expecting a $ 120.00 rod to feel like a $ 400.00 rod but my Mojo Bass' are WAY more sensitive (to me). Quote
waymont Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 The 703 is a great moving bait rod. probably not the most sensitive rod out there. Quote
Efishin Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 SC is in my hands leaps and bounds better IMO 1 Quote

Until that point my only good spinning rod was a 6'9 MLXF Avid. I threw a shakey head over some gravel using the type of same line the next time I went out just to compare the two rods. Now, the Champion is $40 more expensive so it should be more sensitive but the overall sensitivity difference was striking. I only own one Croix now and 9 Dobyns. But whatever works for you. I used St Croix for a number of years and caught a lot of fish with those rods. Quote

For moving baits I think they are great but for bottom contact look elsewhere. I think I've fished $99 rods more sensitive than the Champion XP Quote
Super User Tywithay Posted September 16, 2020 Super User Posted September 16, 2020 I felt the same way about Dobyns, and St Croix for that matter. Tried Champions, Extremes, Fury, Legend Tournament, Legend Elite, Avid, and Premier. They all felt dead compared to comparably priced rods from other manufacturers. The Kistler nfc rods or an Expride are light years ahead in performance compared to the Champions and LTs, in my hand. Luckily, that's why we have options and people can fish what they like. 2 Quote
looking45 Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 IMO, you are comparing apples to oranges. You can't compare a rod to another one that costs 4X as much. I consider the Fury series entry level rods. Compare the SC to a $400 Dobyns to get a fair comparison. Compare a $400 Dobyns rod to a $100 SC rod and your opinion might change. Quote

I said that the Mojo Bass at $ 140.00 feels way more sensitive than the $ 120.00 Fury 703C. 1 Quote
Super User fishballer06 Posted September 16, 2020 Super User Posted September 16, 2020 Having owned numers Avid's, Avid X's, and LTB's, as well as numerous Champions and Extreme's, I'll say this - The Champion lineup is probably a touch above the Avid/Avid X line, probably about on par with the LTB, and then the Extreme line would certainly be the nicest of them all (which I would expect). Super User J Francho Posted September 16, 2020 Super User Posted September 16, 2020 I have Avid, LTB, LE, and Champ Extremes, and I would say what @fishballer06 said is pretty accurate. Mojo and Fury don't register on my mid/high end radar. Quote

Randy Price Posted September 16, 2020 Author Posted September 16, 2020 All, I wasn't expecting the Fury to be on par with a Legend Elite, NRX etc.. I was just disappointed in the sensitivity compared to a Mojo Bass which is basically in the same price range. 1 minute ago, looking45 said: My apologies, I just reread your post. No other real gripes other than the sensitivity. In all fairness I normally use the Legend series of rods from SC and they are 4X the cost. I live in N. IL and SC is king along with G Loomis. I was glad to see the Dobyn's rods at Scheel's in Springfield, IL. I didn't have the money to try one of their nicer rods. I'm sure their more expensive rods are comparable to the nicer SC rods. 1 Quote
evo2s197 Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Dobyns are way overrated imo the most overrated if you don't count Kastking, the higher end models are serviceable in a pinch though. If your a St. Croix fan check out the new Legend Xtreme AGS, amazing rods. The Steez AGS bottom contact is also special. Of course GLX, NRX, Conquest and K2 A few other rods also have that "IT" factor, but Dobyns isn't part of that list. 1 Quote

Fishingmickey Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 I have several rods of both brands. I really like the SC Mojo Bass rods. IMHO they are excellent for the price point. I have a couple of the Sierra and a couple of the Kayden rods from Dobyns. I like both of them. I have picked up, wiggled and felt the Fury in Academy. I thought and felt like it was a heavy rod, definitely entry level. Nothing wrong with it per say. Quality of build looked good. I just didn't like the rod. Fishingmickey Quote
GReb Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 I’ve owned both and sold both. I liked the action of the Fury better but it’s a bit heavy. The Mojo was more sensitive but just didn’t feel right. Quote
Super User Cgolf Posted September 16, 2020 Super User Posted September 16, 2020 Living in WI I definetley like the St Croix rods I have. But my Dobyn's sierra spinning rods are very sensitive and I would say my Champion XP is a lot more sensitive than my Avid X. I feel both brands have a place in my lineup. My Premier MH moderate action casting rods is probably my overall favorite cranking rod. Quote
Born 2 fish Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 In that price range take a hard look at the Daiwa tatula rod not the xt very sensitive for the money. Quote
Smalls Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 I think a lot of people over hype the fury, making people think it's going to perform like a high priced rod. They're a great rod at a good price, I like mine. But I'd still rather spend another $25-50 and get a more sensitive rod for bottom contact baits. 1 Quote
Super User Columbia Craw Posted September 16, 2020 Super User Posted September 16, 2020 Remember the law of expectations. It also applies to fishing rods. 2 Quote
DanielG Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 The fury is their 'affordable' rod. It's okay. Move up to a Champion and there's a big difference. Pricy I know but it's a good rod. Quote
kayaking_kev Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 Fury 703c was my 1st of 14 Dobyns rods. I ended up liking it for Jerkbaits so much that I bought a Fury 663c. They're pretty good at tossing Spinnerbaits and Squarebills also, but yeah not the most sensitive rods. The Extreme HP and Xtasys are pretty sensitive though. I've been trying to compare my Xtasy 723c to my Conquest 843c for the last few weeks to see which is more sensitive and still haven't been able to pick a clear winner. Quote
Super User FishTank Posted September 17, 2020 Super User Posted September 17, 2020 I have not fished it but holding the Fury in hand, it reminds of the St. Croix BassX. The blanks seem similar. 1 Quote
