Bandersnatch Posted September 15, 2020 Posted September 15, 2020 I've been looking at picking up the daiwa tatula elite 6"9 Andy Montgomery skipping rod and have been looking at alternatives. I'm wondering if anyone has used the p3 super destroyer or the new p5's for skipping. I'm assuming they are crazy light and sensitive but wondering if the action and power is right for skipping a jig under a dock. Quote
Stephen B Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 It's perfect! Definitely go with the MB 1 Quote

Stephen B Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 Yes sir. Get them while you can. The new Super Destroyer is amazing! Great rod for skipping jigs, swimming a jig, etc. Quote
evilcatfish Posted September 16, 2020 Posted September 16, 2020 I’ve done some skipping with my SD and it works quite well. Very versatile rod. Just one word of caution, while the handle is cool and transmits vibration nicely, it’s hard to hold if you don’t wipe your hands off well. Water isn’t an issue but greasy stuff like sunscreen or oil from soft plastics can be a problem. 3 1 Quote

scbassin Posted September 17, 2020 Posted September 17, 2020 You might want to check out Dobyns Champion XP DC 610 4C It designed for skipping. I have one & it's one of my go to rods Check it out on T/W 1 Quote
Diggy Posted September 18, 2020 Posted September 18, 2020 I wonder if the Tachyon Shaft would be better or not in some cases? I guess line choice would dictate some of this due to the action of the rods. 1 Quote

F6-69X Super Destroyer 6'9" Heavy Med-Fast 12-25 1/4-1.25 $499.00 F6.5-67X Tachyon Shaft 6'7" Heavy Regular 12-25 1/4-1.25 $499.00 They are rated for the same line. The tachyon shaft is two inches shorter but a half power heavier. I'd love to know first person experience from these rods for this technique. It's scary to spend $500 on a rod that you're unsure of. The tatula elite Andy Montgomery is a lot less cost at $180. Still up in the air. Quote

Crackintubes Posted September 30, 2020 Posted September 30, 2020 I was not a huge fan of the tatula elite montgomery rod. Felt very very stiff in the tip. Quote

Out of all my gear I couldn't help myself but to keep the taychon shaft in my hands, especially in Florida. I found that it easily skips a 6 inch senko or 5.8 inch geecrack bellows stick well. It will throw the five inch but you'll have to be more careful. I spent most of my time in Florida throwing a 3/8 jackhammer with a cowbow or spunk shad trailer. I threw the 1/2oz too. I threw all my techniques on braid to 16-20lb fc100 leader. It also was fantastic for a swim jig, Texas rig and the most fun I had was pitching a 1/4 oz Tokyo rig with a big craw/creature into flooded bushes in 3ft of water. I typically throw my jackhammers on a 7'3mh adrena and was not limited much on distance on the short tachyon shaft. Also, I could not help but laugh like a little kid feeling bites and swinging for the fences with this thing. The tachyon shaft is crazy light for its power and incredibly sensitive. I'd venture to say it's ? nrx sensitive ?. It also bends pretty deep when pounding fish to the boat. I just picked up the super destroyer because ya know, you have to have a second skipping rod. Will report back on that soon. 1 Quote

I will be waiting for the update and hope it is as good as the report on the Taychon ? 1 Quote

Very thin and comfortable at the same time. I also don’t feel like I’m giving up overall sensitivity too much. Quote

Sine you have both, which would you recommend and why if you had to select a rod that combines sensitivity with skipping skills. Thanks a lot! Quote

I finally got to push the SD through it's paces. I think they are both really special rods. The SD has a little softer tip which imo lends to its versatility and would make skipping lighter baits easier. Both are very sensitive a nd you wont miss bites. My sd paired with a steez ct is like my ninja sword. I can do anything! Quote

I went with a NrX 804c (steez a + steez sv tw spool) for my skipping activities and the super destroyer (2021 zillion) as my chatterbait/ spinnerbait set up for the kayak. The SD is indeed a very special rod. Looks great, has a very cool action and soo light and nimble. Only challenge i have is the handle. It gets slippery very quickly. Quote

I kept an eye on the handle and it didn't bother me even with putting in bait sent, line conditioner and sunscreen. One thing that may make a difference is the way I like to hold the rod with small reels. I really enjoy reels like the aldebaran, curado 70 and steez ct sv 70. These reels allow me to have a really solid planed reel with my fingers fully wrapped around the reel seat. The result is an incredibly connected feeling that you have a lot of power influence over. Yeah, the challenge currently for me is the time of cast. That is where I hold the rod purely on the grip and that is when it could slip. Once the the lure is in the water, I usually change my grip and adjust my hand to palm the reel. At this point the rod handle becomes less important, since the grip comes from palming the reel. I usually wear a Simms SolarFlex Guide Gloves that has a good leader layer that also adds some grip. Quote
