Super User king fisher Posted September 13, 2020 Super User Posted September 13, 2020 Why is it a common belief that a bass will strike a black worm, black, black or black with other color jig, black creature bait, black chatter bait, black crank bait, and even black buzz baits during the day, but will only strike a black spinner bait at night. I have success with black spinnerbaits even in clear water on sunny days. Am I missing something? 2 Quote
Super User roadwarrior Posted September 13, 2020 Super User Posted September 13, 2020 Well, when it comes to spinnerbaits, any color will do...as long as it's white! 2 Quote
Luke Barnes Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 Ive had luck with alot of other black colored lures at night over a black spinner bait. Even a black and blue finesse TRD they have smacked at night. But still havent gotten a bite on a black with two Colorado blades spinner. Quote
Super User scaleface Posted September 13, 2020 Super User Posted September 13, 2020 When I first started bass fishing from a boat and using baitcast gear for the first time [ Ambassaduer 5000 on a 5'6" Lews Childress fiberglass speed rod] I bought a couple of Blakemore C.C. spinners . I had trouble casting most lures but these were half ounce with a big copper Colorado and a "black" skirt .They were the only lure I had that I could cast competently with that combo .I caught lots of bass on those big black spinnerbaits and won my second club tourney entered using it , with three bass that weighed thirteen lbs . I might have to revisit black this autumn . Quote
Super User A-Jay Posted September 13, 2020 Super User Posted September 13, 2020 Most any day light bait can be a productive night time bait for me And vise versa But this one has been a good low or no light bait The teeth marks on the blade tell the story. I never fish it during the day for some reason. Might need to change that A-Jay 2 Quote

Super User Boomstick Posted September 13, 2020 Super User Posted September 13, 2020 Dark colored spinnerbaits typically excels in two conditions - night or really dirty water. We don't have water that dirty in the northeast though, so I can only confirm one of them to be true. Quote

I am a big fan of the Thunder Willow (Oklahoma) blade. Distinct Thump. I've had to upgrade the blade hardware because the brown bass kept biting them off. Super User jimmyjoe Posted September 13, 2020 Super User Posted September 13, 2020 I don't fish at night. Up until this year, I hadn't used spinnerbaits with black skirts. I now have two; one with a black blade, one with a nickel blade. I was very happy this spring, because I got fish on both. I haven't gotten anything off them post-spawn, though. Clear or muddy water didn't seem to make all that much difference. We'll see what fall brings. jj Quote

A-Jay https://www.tacklewarehouse.com/Picasso_Thunder_Willow_Replacement_Blades/descpage-PTWRB.html In the Northwest they are called Mag. Willow blades. They have become practically the only style of blade used for king salmon. You can get them in an almost unbelievable number of color and finish combinations. My favorite color for salmon is called strobe. Half char. half black on the front, half orange half black on the back with the black on opposite sections. Is supposed to have a strobe like effect. Looks cool to me. I have also had success using them on spinner baits for bass. 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted September 13, 2020 Super User Posted September 13, 2020 Black is a good lure color for nighttime fishing but it will also work during the day. How you work the lure is more important than what color it is. 2 Quote
cookieman Posted September 13, 2020 Posted September 13, 2020 started using black crankbaits this year with good luck so experimented with sprayed black blades on sone spinnerbaits. White and chartruse skirt with black blades has had some success mostly on cloudy days. Most water where i have fished this summer has been muddy or stained also. who can explain it, i cant. Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 14, 2020 Global Moderator Posted September 14, 2020 Black with copper blades is a great color for dirty water. 2 Quote
Super User Catt Posted September 14, 2020 Super User Posted September 14, 2020 Quite simple, contrast ? Black or dark hued lures give maximum contrast at night or in off colored water when run on or near the surface. 1 Quote
Super User MickD Posted September 14, 2020 Super User Posted September 14, 2020 I have had times when in very clear water during the day black spinnerbaits or chattebaits were the only color that largemouths would hit. No so for smallies, I believe, but I don't use spinnerbaits much for smallies. From what A-Jay says, I better get at it. Quote
river-rat Posted September 14, 2020 Posted September 14, 2020 I've had a great deal of luck on a back spinnerbait with black nickle blades on a bluebird day in the fall and winter. Also like Bluebasser86 pointed out a black spinnerbait with copper blades works well in dirty water. 2 Quote
Super User gim Posted September 16, 2020 Super User Posted September 16, 2020 I have been fishing at night three times since July and I can positively say that a black spinnerbait has been the most productive lure. I have caught a couple fish on a dark colored bladed jig too but the spinnerbait was the better performer. I honestly have not tried it during the day. Quote
