Super User NorcalBassin Posted September 13, 2020 Super User Posted September 13, 2020 Anyone else have a wife or someone else they're close to that loves essential oils? My wife is all in and we give her a hard time about being a bit of a mad scientist. That said, when the times comes we're sick we're okay with some on guard and when we're sore we're cool with some deep blue. 1 4 Quote

Global Moderator 12poundbass Posted September 13, 2020 Global Moderator Posted September 13, 2020 My wife isn’t in to essential oils, but she is in to natural remedies. Sometimes it works for her, sometimes it doesn’t. I call my wife a squirrel, her and her brain go a million miles a minute and she sometimes doesn’t fully read everything. One time she read about a cinnamon concoction that helps with this and soothes that. She proceeded to boil cinnamon sticks for her concoction and the next morning drank her brew. Later that morning her speech was slurred, and her sentences didn’t make sense one bit. I did a quick google search and found that too much cinnamon can actually kill you! She didn’t finish reading the instructions to her brew and added a couple too many cinnamon sticks and boiled them way too long. She spent the next 24 hours flushing her system out. We laugh about it now, but at the time she was lucky I’m able to talk to her while I’m working and figured out what was going on, otherwise it might have ended differently. 1 Quote

Super User soflabasser Posted September 13, 2020 Super User Posted September 13, 2020 Mankind has used various herbs to treat aliments for thousands of years. A lot of the medicines made today where made after studying the compounds in some of these herbs. For example digoxin was first isolated from the foxglove plant in 1930 and now this medicine is used to treat many types of heart conditions. With that said modern day medications and vaccines are superior to essential oils and herbal remedies. Quote

Others from nature White Willow bark tree was noticed to reduce pain and inflamation - active ingredient now synthesized and sold as Aspirin Valarian root tea was known for it's calming effects - active ingredient now synthesized and sold as Valium And the list goes on and on BTW: Best bug repellent I've found is Calendula Essential Oil - just a drop at pulse-points every couple hours keeps away even horse-flies...and it's non-toxic unlike DEET. The list is very long but it is important to understand that many herbs have side effects just like prescription medications. Another thing to know is that it is common for herbal remedies to cause drug interactions with medications you are taking for other conditions. That is why you should always tell your Health Care Provider what herbs and other natural treatments you are taking. I have read about Calendula essential oil and other similar products, they seem to work for some people. I do not like DEET either but there are few chemicals that are as good or stronger at deterring mosquitos from biting you. There are places I fish in Florida where the mosquitos will still bite you even if you cover yourself with DEET. Quote
Linewinder Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 I don't understand why they are essential. I mean, sure, there are uses as described above, but doesn't that make them optional? Quote
DaubsNU1 Posted September 22, 2020 Posted September 22, 2020 "Essential oils" is just another way of separating you from your money : ) 1 Quote
