Hey ya’ll - what say you on the best Dobyns model for Crank and Jerkbaits? I don’t go overly heavy.....usually KVD 1.5’s up to 3/4oz jerkbaits like KVD300’s. Like at least 7’ length.

Several of the lines have good crankbait rods. All depends on how much you want to spend.

I'm running a Fury 705CB personally.

I had the 705CB. Terrible for squarebills and lipless. It's like a whip. 703C is much better. Fine for jerks though.

I have to agree. I had one and I know they need to be forgiving but they were almost like a wet noodle. Glad A-Jay turned me on to the KVD Tour composite rod! Great for lipless and square bills and I got it cheaper too! As for trying to double as a j-bait rod I mean you COULD do it but I would not recommend it. Ideally you want a more responsive rod as you want something that will allow you to make quick twitches and then absolutely kill it. It is the instant stop/start action you want and a real slow, whippy rod will not allow that.

Gary Dobyns used the Champion 704cb Graphite version.

I've tried a few different ones, Champion XP 705 cb glass, Champion 634cb, Extreme HP 702c, and ended liking my Fury 703c the best, so I bought a Fury 663c to have a shorter rod and I think it's a great jerkbait rod and can do plenty of other stuff.

I use the Fury 705cb for all most all my treble hooked baits anymore. BUT I crank with braid. I can see how it would not be great for snapping baits out of weeds with mono. I was missing fish, and bending hooks when I used a 703c. I still use the 703 for single hooked reaction baits, like a spinnerbait, swim jig, and chatterbait.

+1 above ... You have to move all the way up to a Champion series I believe to view another cranking specific Dobyns rod ( there are none in the Sierra series) .

Actually - the new Kaden series has a couple crankbait models...between the Sierra and Champion in price.

Just has the Kaden 735cb. I don't think it would be good for jerkbaits.

There's also the KD610-4CB which is a medium/mod that Gary rates for cranks and jerks.

Oh wow, I didn't know he added different models from the test run.

I've got a Dobyn's Champion 735cb Glass and absolutely love it. It cast nicely but it fights the fish really nicely even more. I fish a lot of crankbaits. I've also got a smaller Fury and it's very good but I keep it for lighter stuff that the 735 won't do well with. I'm kinda addicted to this rod actually.

This is the rod that Gary Dobyns specifically designed for fishing Staycee 90.  Easily my favorite jerkbait rod.  Works well for lighter topwater and midlevel cranks.  Anything heavier and I use a MH rod but I bought 704 specifically for jerkbaits.

Where can you get Kaden rods?

I would say direct from Dobyns...but a check of their site shows all Kadens as being 'Out of stock'.

*I could be wrong - but the Dobyns Fury 705 CB appears to be a best value as a cranking rod  at it's price point as so many people recommend it ! ... Seems like it also would do double duty as a chatter bait rod as well where many say a more parabolic rod like the Fury 705CB is preferred .

I dunno about that - I use an Aird-X MH/F for chatters, spinners and buzzbaits myself.

If I were in the market, depending on my budget, Academy is selling Dobyns Fred Roumbanis which are Champion Series rods. They are about the closest thing to the well built Champion Rods,  they just carry the professional fisherman's name. In a comparison between the Fury Series and Roumbanis Champion Series, it's minor, but the price is about $130 difference.  I would probably go with the Utility Rod or the 703C. Dobyns rods run lighter than the specs. A medium heavy is a medium heavy light. I've had excellent luck with the 703C fishing Squarebills. I've also caught a bunch of fish with a jerkbait on the 703C, including an 8lb bowfin.

The Champion 705CB graphite might be a good option. It's rated 1/4 - 1 oz but excels in the 1/4 - 1/2 oz range IMO.

Has a moderate-fast taper so you dont rip trebles out of lips, but still stiff enough for jerkbaits and such.
