Replacement Shift / Throttle too long

Replacement Mercury Shift  / Throttle too long after repair.  I took my boat in for carb rebuild and to  replace the broke shift throttle control. They told me that the cables only come come in 10 or 11 feet and the original was 11 but coiled under the side shroud and causing a bind. They put an 11 foot but as you can see now I have a trip hazard. I am taking it back and they are going to use 10 foot should help a little.  Any suggestions?

I agree, that's not good back there.  Seems like that's a question for your mechanic.  Seems like there's probably room between the console and motor to take up the slack.

Usually it says on the original cable how long it is.  In this instance the original was too long already so that doesn’t help.  The boat shop or mechanic should know what length cable you need. I would go by their suggestion

Maybe I'm missing something but I see a cable port in the splash well, why wasn't the cable fed through it.  The way they ran that one makes me question the intelligence of whomever did the work.  Nobody would want a cable sticking out over a compartment cover and as you said, have a trip hazard on the deck.

I thought the steering and throttle cables went through a hole on the starboard side.

I've seen them go both ways.  If it has cable steering, it pretty much has to through a cable port on the side, but with hydraulic steering, it can come through the splash well.  I've seen throttle and shift cables in either position.

Also, just a little gee wiz info.  This is Teleflex's cable radius recommendation just in case someone runs into this again.

You will see it's one heck of a lot less than what he got handed by his repair shop.

It also looks like they come in one foot increments.  It's definitely not the best install.  I wouldn't live with it.

Thanks! Good information. I just moved it all to the splash well.  Doesn't fell like it is binding haven't had the time to get it out on the water yet.
