Super User Sam Posted September 7, 2020 Super User Posted September 7, 2020 I wanted a large spool of 8-pound test fluorocarbon line so I went to Green Top, the leading freshwater tackle shop in Virginia. Needless to say, I was very disappointed in the selections. No 8-pound fluorocarbon line over 300 yards at Green Top, and those brands were the top ones like Gamma and Seaugar. So I drove to BPS about three miles down the road and looked at their selection. More offerings and a lot of 8-pound 1,000 yard BPS store brand spools with a price tag of $100. I know that Seaugar makes the BPS line and the BPS brand is excellent line, but $100 for a 1,000 yard store brand? I made the purchase as I needed the line for a tournament this coming Saturday. I went home and hit the Internet to locate other options. Sure enough, I found on eBay a 1,000 yard spool of 8-pound Seaugar line at a much lower cost. Only drawback was the delivery date and I needed the line now. Yes, poor planning on my part. Will I go back to BPS and purchase their or other lines in the future? Nope. Will I go to Green Top to purchase line in the future? Nope. Will I go on the Internet a month before I need the line and make the purchase? Yes. Line prices seem to have increased and you face the situation of paying a fortune for a 1,000 yard spool or purchasing smaller amounts of line and end up with extra line that you can't use, other than for a leader. I find that wasteful and avoided purchasing a number of brands with 150 or 300 yard spools. Your thoughts? Am I off base? How much line do you buy at any one time. Comments, please. Quote

COVID has dismantled businesses across the U.S. To not return to a business after the COVID chaos based on a bad experience during the crisis is not giving them the benefit of the doubt. Companies are sold out of products and backordered. They could have it ordered but things are just backlogged. But I personally don't like BPS at all. I don't blame you for not going there lol. Buying line in bulk for sure but make sure it's legit. 1 Quote
Super User FishTank Posted September 8, 2020 Super User Posted September 8, 2020 Amazon has Seaguar Invizx 8lb 1000 yard spool for $70. It's $100 on Tackle Warehouse. If you have prime, you can get in two days (usually). No store in my area carries 1000 yard spool of any line, unless I drive 45min to Cabelas and they only have BPS mono. I use to find it weird to get 150, 200, and 300 yard spools but I decided on lighter lines and heavier lines for that matter, to put a good amount of cheap backing on the spool. That way, I can fill two spools. I just have to keep track from memory (trial and error) how much backing to put on. Below is an example of a 200 yard spool of 6lb going on two spools and I still had some left over. 1 Quote
JediAmoeba Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 I only buy smaller spools because I use braid for everything and leader up. Braid lasts me forever so I don't need to respool too often. 1 Quote
PourMyOwn Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 I'm still sitting on 3000 yard spools of Silver Thread that I store in my gun safe where its good and dark. probably got them 2-5 years ago. It has been discontinued, and I'm slowly auditioning for its replacement. Quote
Super User NYWayfarer Posted September 8, 2020 Super User Posted September 8, 2020 It's threads like this that make me glad I use Berkley Big Game almost exclusively. Kastking Superpower braid and Yo-Zuri hybrid round out my line choices. Quote
Kevinator1 Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 I buy almost all of my gear online now. I usually find the prices lower and free shipping with it. I love mom and pop stores but they are almost obsolete where i live. So gotta go for the best prices. Have to shop smart with the continuing health care costs going through the roof. 1 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted September 8, 2020 Super User Posted September 8, 2020 Free Market principles at work....... BPS and Cabela's are turning into clothing stores and most mom and pops realized that they can't afford to stock what most of us want. ......and asking the Google to find you something will yield you tons of options, whether you ask for it or not Quote

Super User A-Jay Posted September 8, 2020 Super User Posted September 8, 2020 Day in and day out, seems Amazon offers the best deals on all types of bulk line needs. Seriously. A-Jay 1 Quote
Tizi Posted September 8, 2020 Posted September 8, 2020 I use Seagur on some applications and get it from Amazon, the rest I use Yozuri Hybrid, Maxima and Big Game. Quote
