Snapped my squarebill/⅜ lipless/medium crankbait rod this past Friday, looking to replace it while Tacklewarehouse has their labor day sale going.

How is the Daiwa Tatula XT 7' MHR?  Can it toss a ⅜ ounce squarebill accurately?  What are it's true low end and high end as far as weight goes?

I'm currently considering it, the Medium Tatula XT Graphite cranking rod, and the 13 Fate Black 7'1" Medium Cranking rod.  Any input is appreciated.

If you are talking about the MHR Glass XT, I have that rod and it will launch squarebills up to 3/4ounce. I typically use my MR Glass Tatula glass rod for squarebills.  The XT, I use for 5 and 6xd deep divers. It handles those pretty well.

Tizi, if you had to throw ⅜ and ½ ounce squarebills and medium depth cranks as well as ⅜ and ⅝ ounce lipless, which XT stick would you choose?

For that size-range, if you can swing it, get the Tatula MR-glass (TTU701MRB-G), that is my preferred rod for what you area asking. I don't have the XT in medium, only in ML and MH-glass (TXT701MHRB-G).

For cranking, do you think it’s worth the extra money to jump from the XT to the Tatula? If so, why. Just curious. I have a Tatula and love it, and will be getting a cranking rod soon. Just wondering how much better it would be for cranking. I don’t have an XT to compare.

Kdu, I don't and probably won't know how good the Tatula Bass cranking sticks are, but I will know how good the Tatula XT 7' MR is in a few days.  I got the graphite stick instead of the glass.

The XT in medium should work.  I am partial to the Tatula though.

If it says Tatula, I'm fairly well in love.  I'm now debating a 13 Fishing Fate V3 7'4" Chat-R-Crank rod versus a Tatula XT 7' MHR-G for chatterbaits, spinnerbaits, swimjigs, and lipless cranks.

Please give your feedback when you get a chance to fish it. The other dilemma I have is glass or graphite.

That’s kind of my thinking. I am partial to the Tatula also, but to me a cranking rod is an opportunity to save a few bucks without sacrificing too much. I understand the benefits of sensitivity in a cranking rod, but also feel like you can sacrifice some sensitivity as long as you’re still getting a quality rod. I know how good the  Tatula would be but have no experience with the XT.

That being said, what are opinions on glass vs. graphite in these series’

The glass rods work great for crankbaits, nice parabolic bend to pin fish.

I've opted for the graphite in the Medium because I didn't read great things about the glass version and I'll be using the rod for squarebills for the most part, where I think the sensitivity will come in handy to inform me of oncoming contact with cover.

Not sure about you guys, but I fish squarebills in off-road mode a lot of the time.  Most of my casts are working through brush or laydowns.  I use an OG Tatula 7'1" MHR and it's great.  The graphite really allows you to feel your way through the cover and the action is kind of a fast mod fast (or slow fast) if that makes sense.  It's soft enough to keep small trebles pinned but fast enough to pick through the cover and get good deflection.  I'd imaging the XT version is very similar.

I don't know for sure about the XT, but I have the Tatula 701MRB, 74HRB-G, and the Elite 74MHRB and the tapers are excellent. I use them for a little bit of everything that moves. Can't imagine the XT would be much different.

I have that rod too.

I have the Daiwa Tatala (not XT) 7' M/R glass and 7'2" MH/R glass rods. I use the M/R for most shallow and medium crankbaits, and the MH for larger deep divers but also sometimes spinnerbaits and chatterbaits on heavier line.  For a 5/8oz lipless I would prefer the MH/R, but for everything else the M/R should do nicely.

I'm not especially familiar with the XTs but the Tatula glass rods are pretty solid! They're surprisingly sensitive for glass rods too.

I own 3 of the Tatula XT rods. I can say these rods fish, look and feel well above the price point, very light weight also.
