Guitarfish Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 I was going thru the auction baits and was looking at crankbaits. I said 'No, if it had yellow eyes I'd bid'. Then I realized my go to baits all have a yellow eye. Anyone else choose one eye color over the other in the same style crankbait? Quote
Global Moderator Mike L Posted September 5, 2020 Global Moderator Posted September 5, 2020 No! I really don’t care if it has an eye or not, and certainly not what color it would be. Mike 3 Quote
Super User Teal Posted September 5, 2020 Super User Posted September 5, 2020 No. Eyes dont matter to me. I have some repaints that dont even have eyes.. Quote
Super User Jig Man Posted September 5, 2020 Super User Posted September 5, 2020 Yes red. I want mine to look slightly hungover so they will be easy prey. 3 5 Quote
Super User WRB Posted September 5, 2020 Super User Posted September 5, 2020 Color discussionns for bass fishing is always interesting. Between 1900 to about 1950 wooden plugs (crankbaits) had colored realistic glass eyes. About 1950 era lures stopped being made with glass eyes changing to paint on eyes; white with black dot, red andxyellow with black dot being predominates D continues today. Arounf the early 90's halogram eyes started to be popular and common today. Yellow goes in and out of favor, not with bass but bass anglers. In my Flea market lures several decades of lures are posted, interesting eye colors. My favorite Bomber 7A ghost has big yellow eyes for example. Tom Quote

The lure I was talking about had red eyes. My luck has always leaned toward eyes that stand out (like yellow). Even in the holo eyes I look for a gold or yellow ring. Quote
Dens228 Posted September 5, 2020 Posted September 5, 2020 I barely even worry about the color of the entire lure. I doubt I could tell you a single color of any eye on any lure I own. Light, dark, ghost............those are my general choices. 1 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted September 5, 2020 Super User Posted September 5, 2020 I consider eyes (and eye color) only on lures I retrieve very sl-o-o-w-ly. And those are usually very high in the water column or very low. If they're low, I want a big eye, preferably white. If they're high, I don't care about the color, I just want some contrast between the eye and the body. This isn't etched in stone. It's just something I've noticed. jj Quote
Super User DitchPanda Posted September 6, 2020 Super User Posted September 6, 2020 Guess I never gave any care or consideration to eye color. Honestly I think bait color matters some but it's not super important. I give far more attention to bait length, bill style and diving depth. Quote
Guitarfish Posted September 6, 2020 Author Posted September 6, 2020 I think I agree with you about 90% but, I have always picked lures that would seem to have coloring you might find in nature. Crawdad colors are a favorite, shad colors, etc. (Not confident in bright clown colors etc.). If I have the depth range, shape and size, I then pick my favorite colors. If it looks like something to eat to me, the confidence my fish target will eat it grows. And if it has yellow eyes well.......... Quote
Global Moderator Bluebasser86 Posted September 6, 2020 Global Moderator Posted September 6, 2020 A lot of my most productive hard baits don't even have eyes anymore. When I make bladed jigs for myself I never put the stick on eyes on the bait. Just not something I'm concerned about. Quote
