I bought a later model new-to-me boat last April. My previous boat was about 35 years old and had a same age Mercury engine. Smoked like a freight train and I associated that with its age.

This new boat has a Johnson on it and I was leery at first, but I love this thing. Runs great, starts right up and I have to assume well taken care of by previous owner. The previous guy disconnected the oil injector and mixed his own, which woulda been the first thing I did.

He had just put a fresh tank of gas in it when I bought it. Ran great and clean. Every since I've been filling the tank, the exhaust smells horrible and it smokes like a freight train. I was afraid I did something to the motor. A guy at the ramp asked me Friday night what oil I was using and he said, "BINGO. That's your problem. Mine did the same on that cheap Bass Pro stuff."

Is that pretty much the consensus on that Quicksilver brand that Bass Pro sells? My little boy won't hardly go out on the boat anymore because the fumes make him sick. I am in the process of draining the residual and gonna try another brand.

I have a 96 Stratos with a 150 Johnson.  Runs like a top, however, last year one of the seals busted on the fuel pump.  When the mixture leaked out it was spraying oilmixture all over the motor causing the smoke.  It was like a smoke bomb every time i started her up.  $5.oo part.  Now she purrs.  sucks gas but purrss

Quicksilver is actually made by Mercury and is a good oil.  However, the synthetic Quicksilver is way better, atleast thats my concensous when my friend who owns a 150hp Mariner switched.  I run Yamalube which is a synthetic blend and the only smoke out of my Yamaha i get is when it first starts up.  Carburated motors will smoke more compared to efi and efi smokes more than DFI motors.  I don't know why you guyz disconnect the oil injection and mix it with your gas,  but than again your not running a Yamaha  :).

Exactly, My buddy has a Yamaha and I can't believe how quiet it is.  We were running full out and having a conversation without raising our voice.   :)

I use Pennzoil all synthetic in my 1967 Evinrude Starflite 80hp motor. It works great and very little smoke, except when on full choke. Then it smokes, but under normal running condition with choke off it produces suprisingly little smoke.     Happy fishing.

I use quick silver exclusively. I use 87 octane gas. Also I mix my oil with about 6.1 gallons of gas, rather than the traditional 6 gallons. However, my outboard has had a lot of modifications, so be careful with that. But it sounds like you may be blending the oil too rich. Also, I always put the gas in before the oil (~6 gallons at a time). It may be psychological, but I feel like the oil mixes better that way.

Thanks for the advice guys. I notice it more this season, but maybe since it's more recent. Had some gas that sat all winter which may had an affect. Will know more this Friday evening.

Thanks Again.
