Anyone here using the Minnkota EDGE trolling motors? The 55#?

I need to replace mine, and have been thinking of this one, my only concern is the 55# in a 12volt might not be to good for battery time. Anyone with any experience with these? Thoughts?

I have a 55lb stern mount MK but not sure if it is the edge.  Mine is a limited edition camo duck version of something, just can't remember the model. I would say its around 5 years old.  However it is 12V and I can do a full days fishing quite easily on my 10ft Pelican plastic boat.  Has alot of power.  Im sure the one you are looking at would be somewhat equivelant.  Only issue I had with mine is the lower unit developed a leak and ruined some of my wiring.  Had to replace the entire shaft and part of the lower unit but its in working order now.

The nice thing about the bigger motor is you have the power if you need it. If you keep the speed down it will use no more power than a 30 lb motor, assuming it has the digital throttle. If you get the 5/3 speed unit then you will use considerably more power.

I have a Minn Kota Edge 55# 52 shaft bow mount on a 15' 5 Stratos 258V, dry hull weight is 890#; absolutely no power problems after a day on the water.

The Edge models have 5 speeds and are not as battery friendly as the variable speed motors like the Maxxum Variables or the Fortrex when run on less than the highest speed setting. On the highest speed setting, they are equal in amp usage. The Edge models are a few hundred dollars cheaper though.

If you can handle the two batteries for a 24 volt system, then you should check out the Minn Kota Edge 65 at Bass Pro.  They are selling it for $430 and you can get a rebate of $30.  So it is only $400.

thats what i just picked up.  now i can friggin water ski behind my 18' aluminum semi v.  one word of warning about this motor though....no soft start, so its better to be sitting down/braced when starting it up on 5!  I've about gone over a few times!   ;D
