Gene Yoon Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Heavy rods are my go to for frog fishing. But fishing extremely light frogs were hard to cast. Should I stick with a heavy power rod or go down to a medium or medium heavy? Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted August 25, 2020 Super User Posted August 25, 2020 Stick with a Heavy, and go to a heavier frog. The weeds aren't going to have any respect for Medium or Medium-Heavy powers. jj Quote
Super User MN Fisher Posted August 25, 2020 Super User Posted August 25, 2020 I cast even 1/4oz frogs on a Heavy - some reels make it easier than others to toss lures at the bottom of the rod's range. If you have other reels, maybe swap around to find the best combo? 1 Quote
Gene Yoon Posted August 25, 2020 Author Posted August 25, 2020 Edit: I forgot to add this to the original post. Where if fish frogs, there isn't a lot of heavy cover. I frog fish around open water. Quote
Super User Teal Posted August 25, 2020 Super User Posted August 25, 2020 Some of the mid range - high end heavy action rods that were meant for FROG fishing have soft tip sections that load up easily but still have a slot power in the lower section and tips are Fast enough that it gets right to butt section. Tizi Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Who makes frogs that size? Most are 1/2 oz or above. Quote
Super User Teal Posted August 25, 2020 Super User Posted August 25, 2020 I can't call it off hand but there some 1/4 and 3/8 oz frogs out there... I had a few of the small frogs that were supposed to be 3/8 but actually weighed in at 5/16 on my digital scales. Quote
bunz559 Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 If you're fishing open water, a medium-heavy or heavy action rod with a nice tip will work perfect. I throw frogs on a Expride Heavy action in open water and light cover. Heavier cover I throw them on an Expride Extra-Heavy. Quote
Super User GreenPig Posted August 25, 2020 Super User Posted August 25, 2020 Booyah & Lunkerhunt make 1/4 oz frogs that I fish on my Heavy frog rod. 1 Quote

I weighed a 1/2 oz. and 5/8 oz. (per weight on box) and both weighed less than .5 oz. I need to double check those weights just to be sure. Surprised me because normally every lure I've weighed weighs more than what the box states. EDIT: OP, sounds like a MH will be fine where you fish. Or you could get an ALX Zolo Toadface. 1 Quote
