lunkerboss923 Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 I'm really trying to like this rod, but I can't seem to find a lure that this rod excels at fishing. It's like the chef that can cook all kinds of dishes, but nothing stands out. I'm looking at taking it back, but before I do, I was wondering if you could tell me which lures seem to work for you the best on a 734c. I have a Bass X Medium Heavy, currently throw jigs and Texas Rigs on it. Quote

Russ E Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 Zoom ol. monster with a 1/4 oz. Tungsten weight. I use it for other baits, but this time of year it is my dedicated big worm rod. 1 Quote
Super User Teal Posted August 25, 2020 Super User Posted August 25, 2020 I have a Dx744. Excellent rod for 3/8 - 1/2 oz jigs and heavy t RIGS. Quote
lunkerboss923 Posted August 25, 2020 Author Posted August 25, 2020 Welp, it looks like I'll need to get rid of her. I've got a rod that serves those purposes. Quote
Super User FryDog62 Posted August 25, 2020 Super User Posted August 25, 2020 734c Champ is my dedicated swim jig rod... typically 3/8 oz and it excels with this. Have also used it as a spinnerbait rod and thought it was very good for that too. Quote

ec1 Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 734 champion here. Horny toads, and skipping baits with the soft tip. I see this rod also excelling at spinnerbaits and chatterbaits. Quote

matbellon3 Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 I have a Curado K (6.2:1) paired with my Fury 734c and use it for chatterbaits and my large Colorado bladed spinnerbaits. Also will through a swimbait on a 1/4oz Owner Flashy Swimmer on it. Quote

I always looked at it like if spinnerbait and chatterbaits were imitating scared baitfish a higher gear ratio is better, but I'm seeing a lot of people using 6:1. Quote

I have a Lews Tournament Pro MB on it and the gear ratio is 7:2.1 I believe. They don't make that reel anymore but I also have the reel they replaced it with in the MP and they are great reels also! lunkerboss923 Posted August 26, 2020 Author Posted August 26, 2020 Thank you all so much for the replies. I'm still a little confused whether the 6 speed or 7 speed is the deal. I've always wanted a DC reel. It feels like a wasting money getting a 6 speed. Especially on a Dobyns 734c. Quote

I prefer the slower reel because when I fish a higher speed reel i find myself fishing the baits to fast. Also I find it easier to speed up than to slow down. If I'm wanting to burn a spinner bait near the surface then I will use a 7.x:1. 5 hours ago, lunkerboss923 said: Thank you all so much for the replies. If you get a 6 speed and find you don't like it, a gear set for a curado is about 35 bucks then you can any of the three speeds offered. Quote

He meant to say a 6:1 gear ratio reel You can buy different sets of gears and change it to what you want to get the desired IPT. Inches of line gathered per turn of the handle on the reel. Quote

He uses a Curado 200K and that thing casts most of the above lures much further than I can cast anything with the combo. I also forgot to mention he has a Sierra 704C, but the 734C should be very similar. Some people find the tips to be moderate fast as well, but I would say it's a very solid fast. My Daiwa Tatula MH/XF has very similar power and action. Quote
lunkerboss923 Posted August 27, 2020 Author Posted August 27, 2020 I had the Curado K, but my ex went scorched Earth on me while I was on a business trip and sold all my fishing gear in a fire sale. She made out pretty good evidently. ? I'm building back my collection. It's been fun to rebuild. Find out what I like. I am making my 734c into a dedicated single hook moving bait rod. I'm pairing with an SLX 6.2:1 for now, but I'll probably get an SLX DC in a 6 speed. The tip on the 734 is extra fast-ish. I like it that way though. Quote
Bassfishingfred Posted August 27, 2020 Posted August 27, 2020 I love my Dobyn's fury 734 for an all purpose rod . I have it paired with a Shimano SLX XT 7:2. I Throw 3/8 oz Swim Jigs, Texas rigs, Spinner baits, Chatterbaits, small jigs and Medium sized swim baits up to 4.8 Keitech. Works great for all of them:) Quote
