Is there a trick to keeping the chatterbait from rising up too much on the retrieve? I tried using a slim trailer and it helped a little. I read some people bending the blade back to help it start vibrating faster. But I was wondering if bending the top of the blade forward would help with keeping it down?

If you are using a paddle tail, I think you turn it upside down and it will help.  Also, try one a little heavier.

I have noticed that when buying the exact same brand and size, I actually get some that rise and some that stay down really well.  I have to assume it is the angle of the eye the blade attaches to or something like that.

Reel slower! Just kidding...I've has This experience with original chatterbaits...but two and one stays down one doesnt. One thing I've done is rig the trailer vertical..helps alot. What brand and model you using?

I don't know with the actual chatterbait. I make mine to be fished slowly along the bottom and I bend the blades slightly so you might try it.

I am assuming that you bent the top of the blade back. Any idea what would happen if I bent the blade forward?

I doubt the bait would work properly. If anything it would give it more lift I'd think. Bending it back towards the hook point reduces the surface area, reducing resistance and the water should push down on the bait slightly as it swirls off the back of the blade, like the wind off the back of a car swirls down to the road behind it.

Id try a chatterbait custom from Tackle Warehouse or a fogy from siebert outdoors. Both stay down well for me and are made with much better components...the custom is $7 and the fogy is around $5 with a wire tied skirt and a custom colored blade...it's a steal at that price.

That makes sense. Thank you.

try the Jackhammers. Well worth the money because they start chattering pretty much instantly which most of the others don't do. To get mine to stay at different depths, I just go up in weight.

Just read an article on a bass pro chatter bait lover who says he uses a heavier trailer to keep his from rising.

Use ~

FC Line

A heavier bait -  3/4 oz plus

A slower retrieve speed and or a pause to reestablish bottom contact.

A reel with a gear ratio less then 7:1.

Also, I assume your rod tip is down, but if it isn't, do that too.

Pacasso Shockblade has holes in the blade.  Stays down better than any other I've used. The 1/2 oz is perfect for the faster retrieve I prefer in 2 to 6 feet of water.

The newer Pro (Aaron Martens) version does not have the holes so rises more. Very unfortunate because it's much nicer in other ways.

I would say to try a heavier version. And reel slower, as others have already indicated.
