KCFinesse Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I've never used an acid wrapped rod before but I have been considering trying them. I'm building a 7' 3 power casting setup for jerkbaits. I'm using single foot standard size guides because I do not want to deal with micro guide ice-up issues in mid winter jerkbait season. Is this a reasonable first foray into acid wrapping or is this just not a good application? Thanks! -Jared Quote
Super User .ghoti. Posted August 22, 2020 Super User Posted August 22, 2020 I’ve built jerkbait rods both ways; spiral and conventional. Both perform just fine. 1 Quote
Delaware Valley Tackle Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 Spiral wrap won’t have any negative affect on any application that I’ve seen. 2 Quote
Super User MickD Posted August 23, 2020 Super User Posted August 23, 2020 Do a search for "simple spiral" , much easier to layout, performs as well as any other spiral wrap. Here is the short version: Lay out all the guides as if you are going to build on top. Rotate all the guides to the 180 degree position. You can be done here, but if the line touching the blank between the first and second guide bothers you, then add a very low guide (bend to get it as low as possible) with a ring size about the same as your second guide, half way in between the 1st and 2nd guide AT 90 DEGREES. All this guide does is keep the line off the blank, a function that some consider unnecessary. I spiral in the direction that will result in that guide and the reel handles being up when laying on a boat deck, so to the right for right handles, left for left handles. Some will do a stress test to see if they can get by with one fewer guides, but I don't. I've never seen where an extra guide hurt anything (I use Fuji KB/KT runners, size 5.5 ring). I guess it wasn't as short as I thought, once I added tips/editorials. Quote
Super User OkobojiEagle Posted August 23, 2020 Super User Posted August 23, 2020 doesn't seem logical that a spiral wrapped rod would give you any advantage in a tip down presentation or any presentation that you don't want a tight drag on oe Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted August 24, 2020 Posted August 24, 2020 It doesn't give you a disadvantage, and tip wrap/guide wrap with braid is much harder when gravity is on your side. The line, if given a chance would want to go to the bottom of the rod anyway so let it. Quote

It will be stable like a spinner. It's this torque reduction (and possibly the reduction in guide count of one) that is the reason for spiral. 1 Quote
Crackintubes Posted October 2, 2020 Posted October 2, 2020 Have a MB 665 spiral wrapped for my jerk/topwater rod and love it! Wouldn't have it any other way Quote
