Super User geo g Posted August 21, 2020 Super User Posted August 21, 2020 Went to the Everglades A-1 area for some bank fishing. Using a HB frog hooked up on first cast and the action on top water was good for a half hour. Then switched to plastics and again had constant action on the bottom. Caught 30 in three hours, with a 6, several 5’s, and a bunch in the four pound range. Few other fisherman out there today. The top water bite early was really fun. With my thumb torn up, and the heat climbing I left at 10:00. Best day in months in the glades. Fun! 5 Quote

Can't put a boat in this place unless it's a small john boat, kayak, or canoe. Flats are mostly 1 to 2 feet deep, and lots of vegetation. This area is off US 27 just south of South Bay. Quote
Captain Phil Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 I fished the Everglades most of my life. Moved to Central Florida in 1996. The Everglades Canals are a different world. Fishing can be fantastic when the water is low. As soon as the summer thunderstorms start around July, the water rises and the fish seem to disappear. It's like someone poisoned the water. The fish move out of the canals and go back into the flats where they disperse. Back in the day, we used to park the boat and walk the levy. The ponds behind the levy were full of bass. Later we found some tiny canals that were hardly lines on a map. They were crystal clear and ran for miles. Few people went to the trouble of fishing these places. It was worth the effort. 1 Quote
shallow thinker Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 I made a couple of trips out there last winter. I didn't get into any toads but it is a great place for canoes and kayaks. Bank fishing is certainly an option. The rules prohibit any gas motors and it's only open on Fri - Sunday. I believe that's the area where Roland Martin films his YouTube videoes (from a canoe). 1 Quote
Captain Phil Posted August 23, 2020 Posted August 23, 2020 Have you ever tried L67-C canal? It a tiny canal paralleling L67. There is a 2nd ramp on Tamiami Trail where you can launch. It perfect for small boats. Hardly anyone fishes it and it's full of bass. Great place to go when the water is high. Quote

I have fished it many times years ago. We always called it Little 67. Caught lots of big fish there, now about half way out they have it blocked with big rocks, and a chain across the entire canal. Makes no sense to me, why. Always had to make sure you stayed right in the middle because of the jagged walls. I once hit a gator right in the middle while going too fast. Quote
ArthurLK11 Posted August 26, 2020 Posted August 26, 2020 Sounds like a nice day. I moved to Florida 4 years ago and I'm just now starting to venture into the Everglades. Quite frankly it is a bit intimidating. I've spent the last couple years fishing all the neighborhood and park ponds in Davie, Weston, and Plantation, but I'm trying to broaden my area. Went out a couple times on Tamiami Trail, but only managed one dink largemouth, a few small peacocks, and then a bunch of mayan cichlids and other panfish. I think I'll probably wait until winter until I start fishing it harder. Quote

You can't put a 22' boat in the A-1 mitigation basin off US 27. Quote

Super User roadwarrior Posted September 17, 2020 Super User Posted September 17, 2020 Send geo g a private message. He may or may not want to share a specific spot with you, but I am pretty sure he doesn't want it broadcast on the internet. Quote
