Marc Hufnagel Posted August 29, 2020 Author Posted August 29, 2020 GREAT NEWS! I tried some of the suggestions here from you guys and was able to throw a 1/2oz topwater spinnerbait over an hour with not a single birds nest on a M/F 6'6" carbonlite 2.0 BPS rod. I did have to apply a slight thumb at the end of the cast but I was able to get it quite far out. Did I master it? Heck no, but I managed to make it work for one lure and well I have a bit of knowledge to apply to make the other lures perhaps a bit easier. I didn't even touch the spinning setup I took along as I was sure the BC would birds nest. Yay me! thanks to those here that have contributed and helped. A great step in the right direction, I think I'll keep the reel now! 2 Quote
Super User jimmyjoe Posted August 29, 2020 Super User Posted August 29, 2020 Great news! I think we can assume that there is nothing wrong with the reel. 1/2 oz. spinnerbaits usually weight 3/4 to.8 oz. The "1/2" refers to the weight of the lead head, not the whole lure. Don't ask me why they rate them that way .... they just do. So now you have a reference. What you need to do is throw gradually lighter and lighter lures until you expose a problem. And I do mean gradually. You're going to meet weight-point at which suddenly everything falls apart, and you birdsnest constantly. For you, and at this time, that will be your lower limit. Yes, you can practice and get better, but it'll take time and patience. Don't try to rush your proficiency level. You'll just frustrate yourself. Read up about different lines you can use (here in the forums) and different techniques (in the video library, accessed at the top of the page) and next spring I'll bet you'll be good to go. The reason I say "next spring" that is that this is the last of August already. You're in Illinois. You only have 2 or 3 months of clear water to gain proficiency, and I'm not aware of how many days a week you fish. You'll get there, don't you worry. We all did and you can, too. Good luck! jj Quote

That's going to be the easiest variable to change, with the rod being a bit harder. OR I can strictly use the BC with soft plastics with my spinning setup and use this for crankbaits, frogs and spinnerbaits/chatterbaits. If I want to use the soft plastics with it after trying lighter line - I probably need a softer action rod. AM I getting closer? I would never use braid that light on a baitcaster. It's just asking for a big fish to cause line dig if you hook one. If you want to be finesse use 8lb mono or flouro. I throw 1/5 oz neds on 8lb mono on a Lews Tournament Pro with a 6-6 medium BPS Patriot Rod with no problem. Most of todays small low profile baitcasters should be able to pull this off. I can't imagine a computerized reel wouldn't do it. Quote

Good luck! jj Thanks for the advice. I'm down south, almost to the bottom so our cold is the month of January in any given year. I think last year some lakes didn't even completely freeze. We do have a handful of nights in the single digits though. We plan to move in the next year or so to east TN which should be different in fishing I think and maybe some weather too. Wacky weather. 3 hours ago, dodgeguy said: I would never use braid that light on a baitcaster. It's just asking for a big fish to cause line dig if you hook one. You know how Tennessee got its name, don't you? After God made the whole world, He gathered all the angels around and told them about all the work He had done. He pointed out one small area in particular, and told of all the special things that were there. He said, "It's heaven then, y'see." The angel that was typing all this down couldn't type fast enough without making mistakes, and he wrote, "It's heaven, tennessee." When God saw that, he thought about it a minute, and said, "Well, that's okay." So even to this day, when the angels look down from heaven, they look at one particular place and say, "It's heaven, Tennessee." True story. ?? I have no idea how they named "Kentucky". ??? jj Quote
