PiedmontAngler Posted August 18, 2020 Posted August 18, 2020 I have been using an NRX 822 DSR and have been loving it. Actually looking to pick up a second mid to high end dropshot rod and have been interested in powershotting. It appears that people use all types of rods for this due to there not being an application specific rod. My question is, has anyone found a nice spinning rod that they use for strictly powershotting? It looks like there are MH Poison Adrenas and Exprides that go up to 3/4. There are some Megabass that go up to 5/8 but that may not be enough. I may just go for a second 822 and max out at 1/2 oz. Any feedback is greatly appreciated. Quote
Big-Bass Posted August 19, 2020 Posted August 19, 2020 Megabass Brigand or Enforcer or Steez AGS 76MML. You will love any of those choices. 1 Quote
thunderblack Posted August 19, 2020 Posted August 19, 2020 Steez AGS 76MML, Addermine (pretty powerful) or agree with BB on Brigand, 852S, MH Adrena…...I have owned and fished most of these and they are all great rods. 1 Quote

The Steez definitely looks like it can handle it. 21 minutes ago, thunderblack said: Steez AGS 76MML, Addermine (pretty powerful) or agree with BB on Brigand, 852S, MH Adrena…...I have owned and fished most of these and they are all great rods. I may go with the Steez unless others have recommendations. I have the 852S and Addermine but people say they aren't the best for DS. They also have weight ratings similar to the 822 DSR. Quote
The Maestro Posted August 19, 2020 Posted August 19, 2020 How much does the rod's weight rating really matter if you're just opening the bail and dropping straight down or just making short little underhand pitches? I use heavier weights in current and windy situations and would like to just stick with one rod for drop shotting. Quote

The 822 is a fine rod and makes it feel like you're fighting much larger fish so I am a little concerned with using heaver weights. If you would have told me months ago that I would have multiple spinning rods and be using them on each trip then I would not have believed you. They aren't power fishing but have been producing while make the fights more fun. It seems like it would be worth it to have multiple dropshot rods that can easily be used in different situations. Either with multiple baits, weights, tag end lengths, etc. The main part of the lake where I fish offers docks where one type of dropshot may come in handy then it gets deep quickly. Haven't had much luck on the deep portion though. Could be due to the weight and wind with me being in a kayak. 2 Quote

The addermine is a killer DS rod has some power to it but not as much as 852S. The steez is a unique stick and can do it all as well. 1 Quote
Super User NHBull Posted August 19, 2020 Super User Posted August 19, 2020 I have an NRX 852c rigged with a 1/2 ounce and 2/0 worm hook I am tossing deep and at docks. I fish it fast and am liking it a lot. Not sure I will keep it on that, but had to try....There is just something about throwing something that weights over 5/8 on a spinning setup. In my mind this is more of a Bubba shot.....and yes my grandkids call me Bubba ? 7 minutes ago, thunderblack said: The addermine is a killer DS rod has some power to it but not as much as 852S. I am going to do some testing between the 852 and Addermine this weekend and will make a decision from there. Quote
JediAmoeba Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 Anything up to 1/2 oz+ tackle is still dropshotting. I would condider power shotting 3/4 oz + weights. And why not use a baitcaster since the technique is to blast it into the thick stuff? Quote

I have one on the way and I thinking of selling it before I get it in my hands, as I am concerned that the XF tip is going to make it too stiff for fighting big smallies that LOVE to 1) Jump, 2) surge at the boat and 3) dig dig dig, and then run straight at you..... Thinking that a quick unloading tip is going to result in a lot of lost fish when those fish do any of the above.... Your experience says what about going heavier with your drop shot weight...? Quote
thunderblack Posted August 28, 2020 Posted August 28, 2020 Addermine is not your typical XF. This is one of the most versatile sticks I have ever fished. Its not a Loomis XF at all. More of a fast spinner. You'll love it! Quote
