Nothing works all the time except dynamite.   There are many reasons why the Johnson spoon gained popularity.   It was one of the first truly weedless lures. Back when I was fishing the Everglades and Lake Okeechobee, there were good fisherman that never used anything else. Most of them used a pork rind trailer.  Everglades fisherman used a black spoon, sometimes with a black worm trailer.  It's also a relatively heavy lure, so you could cast it farther with the reels we had back then.   This lure works best in short grass.  It's hard to fish in tall reeds.

The Johnson Silver Minnow generated a tremendous amount of strikes but had a less than stellar hookup ratio.

We carried em in silver, gold, & black; the most popular size was 1/2 oz but 1/4 oz had its place. We used them as a surface lure much like y'all do frogs.

Spoons taught us about follow up baits, when a bass blew up on a spoon & missed, we immediately dropped that rod on the deck & chunked a Texas Rig to the exact spot.
