mstpierre Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 I have a 1992 Evinrude 115 OB on my boat I recently purchased. The owner has installed a fuel/water seperator, RACOR, that has a screw on filter and a clear bowl with a drain plug on the bottom. I have replaced the filter element on this filter so that is fine. My question is this: Betweeen the screw in filter and the engine is an inline fuel filter as well. Do I need this on here. I am fine with replacing it with a new one as they are all so cheap. What I am concerned with is how many filters the fuel can pass through before it filters too much and does not allow enough through or creates to much restriction. I just don't want to rob fuel or create too much restriction with redundant fuel filters. So... leave it or replace with a solid fuel line and eliminate inline filter? As always, thanks for all the advise. Quote
Super User fishfordollars Posted April 15, 2009 Super User Posted April 15, 2009 I too run the inline filter between the seperator and the engine. Never had a problem. I change out the inline filter every six months or so. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 Definatly keep it on. I have just gone through alot of trouble because i had no inline fuel filter. The fuel/water serperator does not filter out particles in the fuel. If you do not have a fuel filter it goes straight to your fuel pump, and will cause major trouble. In my case some fuel had become coagulated and the particles broke up and started getting in my fuel pump clogging it up. I had to rebuild the fuell pump(which turns out is pretty easy to do) and put a filter in between the seperator and fuel pump. After i did that i have not had 1 problem. BTW. i have a fuel/water seperator, inline fuel filter before the fuel pump, and another inline filter between the fuel pump and carberator on a 2000 90hp mercury and it runs like a champ. Quote
mstpierre Posted April 15, 2009 Author Posted April 15, 2009 Ok, thanks. Are these filters standard by the nipple size or ...? How do I know which inline filter to get and where to get it. Quote
Ima Bass Ninja Posted April 15, 2009 Posted April 15, 2009 The filter i installed came from Autozone. It cost about $10 has a cleanable filter and is clear so you can see if it is clogged. It also comes with different size nipples to accomidate any size hose from 1/4 to 3/8 Here is the one i have Quote

I do not currently have a water seperator filter on my fuel line, but would like to. I have heard conflicting reports that these filters will filter out the two stroke oil from the fuel. Some advice from users of these filters would be greatly appreciated . Thanks. Happy fishing. ~B.A.S.S.~N.A.F.C.~BoatU.S.~N.R.A.~A.M.A.~ Quote
GLADES Posted April 17, 2009 Posted April 17, 2009 The extra filter probably wont hurt. I use a sierra water/filter separator. It works great and it does filter the gas. It uses a 10 micron filter. No problems or complaints. Quote

I've had a water in the fuel issue once before (expensive repair bill) so I'd like to install one of these filters as long as it won't create a problem with my 2 stroke oil.
