Both my Black Max reels are on Daiwa Aird-X’s. One a MF and the other a MHF. I have no issues with either reel. I had no problem reeling this bass in last Friday that bit on a Daiwa/GYBC Neko Macho weightless TR on a Gamakatsu 3/0 EWG.

Don’t know if you will agree with me on this or not but I’m thinking the combo rod may be a bit more on the moderate side vs. real fast which should make it good for fishing a larger variety of baits. He’s 11, might be the best thing for him to bass fish with bait caster at a young age. Younger the better.

I like the black max.  I’ve only had one fail on me. When I tried to cast it hard the clutch would engage and the momentum jerked my rod in the water. That one got replaced pdq

I'm not sure. Walmart's product specs leave a lot to be desired. I think the 7' combo is a BMAX3/701MH, which I believe is a Medium Heavy power but I do not see the action. Not even on Abu Garcia's website. But I would think it's likely fast at the most and possibly moderate. I highly doubt if it's XF. 

 

The local WM by me has four left at $59.00. Hard to beat that!

I need to respool my Black Max because I have been using it so much that the line is pretty low. And it's still smooth and quiet. Like earlier, I highly recommend it for beginner baitcasting.
