Jackspt28 Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Hello -Newbie here -looking for a smallmouth bass rod for kayak fishing rivers. I ordered a 150.00 tool kit with manual wrapper and drying motor/stand and a bunch of other tools from Mudhole -now i'm trying to decide what to build. I recently lost my St. Croix triump 7' medium power fast action rod. I fish spinning rods with 2500 size reels and 10 lb braid with a 6 lb florocarbon leader and throw 4- 5''senko worms, 3/16 oz 3'' tubes , and 3'' keitec minnows. Looking for recommendations on a good spinning rod set up for my first build. So much info out there to sort through! Maybe someone has a favorite set up they can recommend to help me get started. Thanks , Jack Quote
spoonplugger1 Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Rainshadow REVC68MXF. Blanks don't care how you build them. Quote
MarkVA Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Consider an MHX SJ812, or an SJ782 if you want something a tad bit shorter. Also look at the American Tackle CCT Aero reel seat. Quote
Westcoast Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 I’ll vouch for the mhx suggestion, I just built an sj871 for tossing Okashira heads and other small swimbaits for smallmouth. Not too expensive and you end up with a decent rod. Definitely something to consider for a first build. Quote
Alex from GA Posted August 25, 2020 Posted August 25, 2020 I like a shorter rod for fishing small overhung rivers for shoal bass in N GA so I built on a Rainshadow IMMWS62MXF blank. I use the same line and leader you do. Quote

Thanks , Jack Irod genesis 2 7'4 medium finesse swimmer. in my opinion the absolute best drop shot/finesse swimbait rod on the market. 2500 pfleuger supreme on there and you're ready to feel a fish fart from 10 feet away, and the outfit weighs like 4 ounces. Super User MickD Posted August 25, 2020 Super User Posted August 25, 2020 Building your own rods allows the option of adding a fastener for lanyards that can prevent losing another. Quote
