lunkerboss923 Posted August 9, 2020 Posted August 9, 2020 So I'm looking at Powell Rods and noticed the power ratings look like the exact same way Dobyns rates their rods. Is there a connection between the two? Thanks Quote
Smalls Posted August 9, 2020 Posted August 9, 2020 As in how they both name them? 704 = 7'0 4 power? A lot of companies do that Quote

Thought maybe Dobyns worked for/with Powell and then started his own thing. Do you mind telling me who else does this? Quote
keagbassr Posted August 9, 2020 Posted August 9, 2020 Pretty much most if not all major rod makers will have A 3 digit number for all their rods with the 3rd number representing the power and the first 2 the length. The difference is some will do feet and inches and some do total inches. So a 704 from 1 maker and an 844 from another would both be 7 ft. 4 powers. Quote
Super User Teal Posted August 9, 2020 Super User Posted August 9, 2020 Gary Dobyns helped get Powell Bass rods off the ground then he got his own line up. He had alot of influences on Powell Quote

lunkerboss923 Posted August 9, 2020 Author Posted August 9, 2020 Thank you...I saw Powell was marking down his rods really big on his website. Quote

Pay no attention to Powell's web page. Look at the tackle warehouse and other stores.... I dont know why its webpage prices are showing high then marked down... and you go to dealers that carry them and they sell them for the "markwd.down" price. I love the old powells I currently have 9 of them...but I dont but them any more... the product isn't the same and I dont get the pricing now. Before it was easy to get Bryan on the phone, I called 5 times in last 18 months and cant get him on phone... just.somone giving me a line... so I choose not to buy them. I called dobyns 2 times and get gary on the phone twice I dont have to speak with the boss, just some who knows what they are talking about. I like my powells and I still search the web for old ones... just dont know about the direction the company is going. My money, I can decide where to spend it now Quote
LegendaryBassin Posted August 10, 2020 Posted August 10, 2020 Not a fan of Dobyns or Powell for bottom contact. There rods aren't sensitive at all but make great moving bait rods Quote
lunkerboss923 Posted August 10, 2020 Author Posted August 10, 2020 I wasn't trying to upset anyone. I was just wondering about Powell's website. Everyone has opinions, fishing has to be the most personal sport as it relates to equipment. I'm happy with Shimano SLXs and Daiwa Fuegos reels and Dobyns Furys and St Croix Bass X rods. Somebody might comment out of the blue how bad my set up is and how I should have spent an extra $50. I'll see your $50 and buy a tackle box full of lures and terminal tackle. Quote

Guess they decided to jump on that new marketing strategy everyone else is using. They say you're always getting at least 50% off when you're really not. I also noticed they jacked up their warranty replacement fee to $90 for their Endurance and old Max rods. I liked their glass rods but I don't think I'll give them another glance now. Quote

Same spot I'm in, if want something in future with similar action I'll look to the dobyns, daiwas, megavass or even custom stuff. But im happy with my gear. 1 Quote
Super User WRB Posted August 10, 2020 Super User Posted August 10, 2020 Gary Dobyns started his company using Lamiglas rods and their length -power rating adding application specific actions. Their isn't a standard today regarding power every rod maker differs it seems. Generally medium light ML = 2, M= 3, MH = 4, H =5. Length is length in feet & inches, action in bass rods is confushing, generally moderate, fast, extra fast and differs with application specific use. Tom Quote
