AppalachiaAngler Posted August 9, 2020 Posted August 9, 2020 Greetings everyone, I’m new here and just wanted to say what’s up to all. Fished for as long as I remember, was born in eastern KY and remember fishing with my grandpa for as long as I have memories. To this day, think all the children have been raised by myself and my brother to enjoy fishing and respect/appreciate that part of nature as well... plenty memories of my niece as a middle schooler when I was going fishing on whims, “I wanna go!”. She was fishing and doing her own thing with myself and her father when she was in grade school, only time she’d holler for help was if she messed up a cast and it was in poison (I’m not allergic). As a kid, was always the river and lakes I fished. Pre-teen I moved and the fishing turned into a creek (Elkhorn Creek, actually a very nice creek and 8 miles short of being a river). Absolutely hated it at first, I was use to crank baits, large spinners, heavier outfits, etc. Once I became familiar with the stream, I learned to appreciate how dynamic fishing a stream is and how quick fishing conditions change. That stream is what taught me a lot about how the bed of the water matters and how fish act in different conditions. Example, that dead hole of stagnant water one week is the hangout for the bass next week after a good rain. Anyway, all that said I lived and fished that for a couple decades or so, so my thinking and my gear has leaned towards that. Medium-light spinning setups at max and usually casting 1/4oz - 1/2oz. Pretty standard I’d fish 8lb mono up until a few years ago when I gave braid a try. Now I’ll fish 10# braid or 20#. Not for the strength on the 20, but to defend against abrasion and line breaks due to it. I just like the feel of braid and loved how I could cast lighter lures with 10# braid and it cast like 4lb mono... aspect of braid I don’t think receives the appreciation it deserves. Anyway, Covid stuff and all that... I’m relocated and my favorite stream isn’t as convenient any more. Back to the river and lakes. I love my bass, but now I’ve got gar, drums, Muskie (wish that was a serious problem, mention it cause I’m a dreamer), and so on to ruin my day and steal my favorite lures. Joined the board to try and get some tips from others experienced in waters similar to what I’m in now and at the same time maybe I can give some tips on things I’m familiar with for others. Fishing is fishing, it’s a luxury best enjoyed with other relaxing recreation at the same time in my opinion (swim, kayak, camp, whatever). 99.9% of us ain’t on no bass pro tour chasing a pay day, just chasing a relaxing time and a good dinner ever so often depending on what’s biting. Seen drunks reel in bigger fish on $10 Barbie rods than some folks with $1k outfits, lol 1 Quote
