How versatile is a spinner? I’ve been trying learn how to use a baitcaster! Can’t get it to save my life. I’ve used spinners for a long time. Can I use a spinner for everything? Me and baitcasters just don’t agree, LOL!!

There's lots of bass fishermen out there using nothing but spinners.

In my arsenal, the only techniques I couldn't use with my current spinners is heavy cabbage fishing - flip/pitch/punch/etc. But I could get a Heavy power spinning rod and a 3000-4000 size reel and that would take care of that spot.

Finesse for me is spinning only, but T-Rigs, swim jigs, crankbaits, jerkbaits and others I can do either spinning or casting.

No one masters the use of a BC the first time they use it.  Heck, even professionals still sometimes get back lashes too.  Keep at it.  Eventually you'll get the hang of it and realize that they have a purpose and are useful in situations that a spinning setup is not.  If I could use a BC for everything, I would.  Some applications just don't work though and the same can be said vice versa.

Well, now that you mention it, that was a classic!

Very versatile.  Yes, you can.  It does take time to learn a baitcast reel.  Some of us longer than others.  :(

Reel size? Length? Power?

I see a number of options with that combo that determine which technique(s) I'd use it for.

Sorry. Reel size 40, Lenght 7, Power...med. heavy

Though the retrieve rate is a little fast for my liking - jigs, spinnerbaits, chatterbaits, T-Rigs are all doable with that combo. Treble lures (crank/jerk) are also doable...but a Fast Action isn't ideal for those.

Been using a 40 size Bill Dance spinning reel for about 12 years now. Its by no means the greatest but means a lot since it was a gift from someone. I fish it often and with proper maintenance it has held up well.

I think youll be happy those Quantums are decent little reels.

Yes.

There is no reason you have to use a baitcaster to fish whether it is

for bass or tuna. A spinning reel can do everything. Is it always the

best tool for the job? No, probably not.

I've written this before, but I set out a number of years ago to fish

nothing but baitcasters. Became quite good at casting even really

light stuff. Was figuring out how to skip, but never quite got it for

most baits. One day the light turned on in my head, reality set in,

and I decided casting wasn't the end-all I thought it could be.

Today I use spinning for 95-98% of fishing. In fact I use 1000 size

reels and short rods (6'6") and under for everything, including

saltwater (striper, etc.). Still enjoy casting, but it's just not the

main thing I do.

I used a spinning rod for 95% of my fishing so far this year and I’ve caught more fish. I’m going to add a “big” spinning rod to my arsenal for light slop.
