Hi, I cleaned my reel with lube and oil I bought on Amazon a week ago. I took my baitcaster (Abu Garcia Pro Max 2) apart using youtube videos and schematics as a reference. Now when I attempt to put the reel back together, I reel the handle and no line reels in at all. The line guide still moves back and forth normally, just no line goes into the spool when through it.

Help would be appreciated, thanks. :)

I can add pictures if needed

I’m not a pro but it sounds like either the metal anti reverse sleeve is not properly seated in the main gear drag stack or the pinion gear is not installed correct.

Does your spool turn when you crank the handle and is your drag tightened?

The spool does not turn. Yes its tightened.

A spool shaft has a "t" pin that seats in the bottom of the pinon gear. when those are seated together correctly, turning the handle will move the drive gear/pinion gear which will in turn rotate the spool. On some reels, tension is needed from the drag and/or CC knob to press down onto the drag stack and keep pressure on the gears to mesh. make sure those aren't loose. If you can move the handle forward and not backward, your AR is correct. If it's rotating backwards w/o resistance, you might have missed the sleeve. reels aren't complicated. you likely missed something small.

Any parts left over?

I have every part for the reel. Just can’t seem to fit the parts back in their spots properly.

I'm just poking fun at you. All of us that work on our on reels have assembled them only to have them not function correctly at times. You've likely got a piece flipped over the wrong way. Just take your time and pull it apart and reassemble it. You can figure it out. When I tear down a reel I've never worked before I take alot of pics with my phone to give me reference for assembling it.

Is it possible the anti reverse bearing is installed backwards?  As another mentioned earlier?

Reels may be uncomplicated to some, but I find them too complicated to go further than just opening them up to lube.  If I think the reel needs more, I get it to a pro.

Completely slipped my mind but on some baitcasters, the actual anti reverse ratchet is keyed so that if its installed upside down, the pinion will never engage.

If your anti reverse ratchet is shaped like this. Try flipping it upside down.

Which way should the anti reverse sleeve be? I may have it the wrong way. Should the round side or rectangle side be facing upwards?

Reminds me of the time I showed my Grandpa a Daiwa Tournament Z-iA I saved up for a year and finally bought it,  this was back in 97 or 98, he looks at it and says "my Garcia Mitchell 300 is better than that commie junk it just needs a cleaning" 30 minutes later he calls me into the garage to check out his freshly cleaned reel, I look it over and point to the pieces laying next to it and ask " what are those grandpa?"

He looks at them and shrugs then says " those were extra pieces after I cleaned it"

Needless to say you couldn't even crank it.

I'm glad I didn't get my mechanical skills from him.

Best to calm down , let it alone for a day and try again . Is there anything that feels forced into position? Are there any thumb clickers you did not notice ? We have all been there and remember it's not always necessary to get into every single part of a reel when cleaning.

Modern reels have an anti reverse bearing, which is a roller bearing that allows rotation in one direction but not the other.  I guess it can look like a sleeve, but if you look closely, there will be about 8 tiny rollers inside it.  The geometry of the races allows rotation in one direction but not the other.  The geometry differences are not apparent visually, I expect.   I was suggesting that if it were in "upside down," it might do what you are observing.  I have no detail on your particular reel, but if you can recognize the roller bearing, and it's possible to turn it over, try that.

But don't do anything drastic.  You have not damaged the reel, so if you cannot figure it out get a pro to fix it.  And consider it a lesson learned.

Hes referring to the sleeve that rides inside the roller bearing. With most reels, the design will not allow you to install the AR bearing upside down/backwards.

I still feel its likely the AR ratchet if that hasnt been checked.
