Super User scaleface Posted August 11, 2020 Author Super User Posted August 11, 2020 I did much better today , caught over 50 per cent on Ribbetts and Rage toads . Ran out of baits early . 15 toads in about 3 hours .I didnt do anything different , the bass were just taking them better . I'll have to buy 5 packs next time . The local farm store has a discount bin full of Zoom toads but they dont look like they would make much commotion . Quote

Try 4/0 round bend , they work better for me. The ewg points inward just a bit, I would about rather have it pointing out slightly 19 hours ago, scaleface said: I did much better today , caught over 50 per cent on Ribbetts and Rage toads . I don't throw a toad that much. I have a couple of spots in my little lake that I specifically use a toad. No mat coverage but too weedy for treble hooked top waters. Shallow and a ton of stumps. There are also a couple of holes that I want the toad to sink in to. It might seem strange but I use a VMC drop Dead Hook for my toads. Weight doesn't really matter. Keeps them pretty level when I want them to sink and the hook up is about the same as a swimbait because that's basically how you're fishing it, just on the surface rather than down in the column. The only thing is you gotta rig them dead straight or they don't run right. I got some of these and used them yesterday . They are my toad hook for now . I didnt have much of a toad bite going on but liked the way they performed . I missed the first ten bites , but that was the fishes fault . Ended up catching eight on it . Quote
BassNJake Posted August 21, 2020 Posted August 21, 2020 How did I miss this thread?? I'm probably in the 75% range most of the time. Some days it seems like they dont eat it, they just slap at it. I have had a much better hook up ratio since I stopped making really long casts and use the alabama shake retrieve I am mainly shooting at specific targets and the shake allows the bait to stay in place longer Since my lake does not have weeds, I can use a rod with a softer tip which helps with the bama shake 1 Quote
Super User the reel ess Posted August 21, 2020 Super User Posted August 21, 2020 I generally do not use toads due to the terrible hookup ratio. 1 Quote

Glad you liked them I spotted them at Bass Pro Shop and remembered someone recommended them . I got the 4.0 1/16th ounce . The 5.0 looked to long . I no longer have to rig the bait with a slight bow to keep it upright so it also gives them a little better action rigged straight . This is my second year toad fishing and its been a constant evolution . Quote
Jaderose Posted August 22, 2020 Posted August 22, 2020 That's the #1 thing I like about them. You could rig the toad dead flat. The little bit of weight doesn't affect the action but does help just a tiny bit when you want some sink. I just did it on a whim one day a few years ago and was pleasantly surprised that it worked well. 1 Quote
Super User soflabasser Posted August 23, 2020 Super User Posted August 23, 2020 For solid body frogs my hookup ratio is better than hollow belly frogs. I make sure to use the sharpest hooks I can find. Quote

I bet its close to 25% . The problem seems to be the bass not taking the lure well . What do you guys figure is your percentage in strikes and bass landed ? *Typical Toad will use a Gamakatsu 4/0 ~ 5/0 EWG hook , you may try bending the hook point up 1 or 2 degrees to aid in increasing hook up percentage . 1 Quote
